Running the vRS on alternative fuel?

Featured Replies

Not really worth it. Even at 50mpg(ish) you're gonna use near on a gallon in a 40 min round trip. At £5/gallon(ish) you're not saving, unless you happen to pass the place without needing the special trip. It's why I can't just go fill up as it's a 50 mile 'round trip for me, negating any potential £5 saving :o

Glad it's not just me who thinks that. :)

To be honest it's about a 20 minute drive but in the city so it's only about 5-10 miles away...... Just i still can't warrant going out of my way to only save £2..... I'd rather spend £2 more and have an extra 40 mins - 1 hour of my life back. :D If it were a saving like LPG etc... where the saving was £10+ a tank then obviously that would be differant etc...

Cheers

Dave.

Have a guy delivers 40gal Red D for £50 cash, but dare not contemplate it

Though in fourty years driving,400miles a day 5/7 I have only been stopped twice and never dipped

I guess the first red I bought, I would be checked next morning on my way out the street :-)

I buy Bio for 88ppl in a 200 litre drum, I run it at between 10 and 20% and it lasts me between 3 and 4 months. I do about 3k a month and these days it saves me about 85p to £1.70 a tank.

It saves me about a £100 a year on average and as diesel prices continue to rise it will save me even more. Not a massive saving but £100 is £100 and it's not the only reason I use it.

Do it I would, daylight robbery at the pumps at the minute.

Considering we have one of the worlds largest Oil and Gas fields just off our shores why should we get robbed daily when we fill up our vehicles. :(

 When you buy red diesel in a can from our local place she writes your reg down in a small book they have.

Its funny, i went for some red for my forklift, the next day the customs and exercise were round dipping all our vehicles. You would think they had nothing better to do, like catch gypsys who run on red and have no insurnace tax and probably no leicence

convert your vrs to lpg, more performance, cheaper fuel by a lot,and better for he environment, whatis there not to like:confused:

How about central heating oil? Especially as it's now getting chilly....

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

You can't convert a diesel engine to run on just LPG, it's not physically possible.

LPG fumigation (Like Jason and a few others have tried) doesn't do a huge amount either except to clean up the burn at higher rpms. Such systems can be tweeked to provide more power and cleaner emissions but the cost/reliablility of the system along with the practicality make them poor value in smaller cars.

The fact that LPG costs half what conventional fuel does is also a falicy as very often vehicles converted to run on it have lower mpg's and less power as well as the fact you loose half your bootspace.

There are some vehicles that will acheive lower running costs through LPG such as lgv/hgv's but the VRS (Or any other diesel hatchback for that matter) will never be one of them.

that explains why there arn't many about then:rofl:

Be very careful with the Bio!!

I have just spoken to my diesel mechanic and between him and one other garage, they have had 26 diesel pump failures in the last few months.....all had run on bio!

Also when the pumps have been sent in to be refurbished, about 70% were beyond repair and had to get new/replacement units.

He advised me that he very rarely used to change diesel pumps, but it is becoming a regular job now.

One guy had a low milage old vauxhall that had only done 60,000 miles, never had any trouble until he put bio in it.......next day it would not start....the pump was fooked and due to cost, the car had to be written off :thumbdwn:

He currently has a diesel Frontera on the ramp........having the diesel pump replaced due to bio.....and he has to drain the fuel system and clean it all out......gonna be a big bill for that one!

The main issue still apears to be lack of quality control with the manufacturing process.

My mechainic also advised me to not run bio at all in any common rail engines (i.e. PD ones).

[pedant mode] PD is completely different to CR [/pedant mode]

...but I think I'm going to need a lot more convincing before running bio at anything more than a few % in the mix...

Sage advice from a mechanic that doesn't seem to know that PD's aren't common rail :P

I may be my interpretation of what he said......

But having seen a pump destroyed on my own engine (plus the head and 5 valves....), I know that I won't be risking putting any bio in my Fabia at all!

One suggestion I read recently was to bung a quantity of 2-stroke oil in the tank when running higher %ages of unusual fuels.

Though you end up with quite a cocktail... Diesel + bioD + Millers :D + 2 stroke oil.

I think I'll stick with the diesel for the time being. It somehow feels safer.

Dear god, that would smoke!
