Running the vRS on alternative fuel?

I thought the PD injection system on the Fabias made them totally unsuitable to running vegetable oil?

I doubt a couple of litres in a full tank will make any difference. That said there is always a first time for one to go pop.

BryanD has used it for a while, and as far as I know hasn't had any problems.

Although he has been conspicuous by his absence recently.

Hmmmmm.

You need a licence to shift waste oil in decent quantities. They don't like to make it easy...

I spoke to the local council regarding this, and as long as you classify it as 'used oil' not 'waste oil', no licence is required. ;)

"At 25% veg oil in 75% diesel, your exhaust stops smelling like a taxi and starts smelling like a doughnut fryer. It's pleasant and a real talking point..."

What a geek.

Mmmmmm.................Doughnuts....................Homer moment!!

Just asked Dave - apparently he gets rid of 100KG of solidified waste oil every month. Don't know if that is at all suitable for processing though....

I think that the problem with this is that companies are required to show that they dispose of their waste to a properly certified contractor so that there's no risk that it's just being dumped in a river somewhere - probably why chippies seem reluctant to let you walk away with their old oil.

If you use the oil as fuel then you are required to pay duty on it. Recent case in Llanelli when Tesco couldn't keep enough stock of value vegetable oil - it was HM Customs and Excise that were concerned about it.

There are a number of places that will supply biodiesel in an IBC - you do have to have somewhere to keep it though and I'm not sure that you're allowed to store more than 40 litres of fuel in an unlicensed premises.

This site looks interesting...

Using Vegetable oil as a diesel fuel

Only thing is that you are supposed to pay tax on it....

Not any more, up to a certain limit, for personal use.

Have just (probably stupidly) filled up my Octavia vRS with recycled veg oil biodiesel. Got from a proper pump. Was confident that it was OK after a chat with the biodiesel distributor and a bit of research.

There seems to be some conflict and I want to know whether I have done something stupid in reality. Car seems to run perfectly smoothly, but I do have trouble starting it. Help reassure me. Someone!

Not in a VRS, I know someone who has run an ordinary Ford Transit Diesel Van 2000 reg, on a 40:60 mix of Lidl Sunflower oil @19p per litr and ord diesel since new. and had no ill effects though changes fuel filter every 10k

The law for customs and excise has changed, and you may now use 2500ltr vegetable oil per year personal use

As I understand it a VRS is PD and in this case you could not use vegetable oil in place of BIO diesel long term

The original diesel engine was made to run on peanut oil, or anything that when squeezed made a bang, they still do, only it is the pumps and filters that cause any problem

If your running 100% you will, especially in the colder weather.

Also if yours is a VRS Diesel that must mean it's a 170 which is fitted with a DPF. They are not supposed to be run with any Biodiesel.

Let us know how you get on

Does anyone know anywhere I could buy a 200 litre drum and have it delivered ? The nearest Biodiesel outlet to me is some 40 mile 'round trip, so by the time I've saved £4 on the cheaper fuel, I've used a gallon just getting there ! I fill up with about £40 a week so there is a good benefit to be had, but it seems Leeds isn't catered for :(

Also, the guy running his van on Lidl cooking oil, I've heard that used oil is preferred as the heating process affects the molecular structure making it more suitable for fuel use. At 19p a litre, how much heating would need to be done to simulate this effect if you left 20 litres at a time bubbling on the stove, offset against gas ??

So what's to stop you going out and buying a ten gallon tub of cooking oil... mixing it with diesel and then using that?

Surely the stuff that hasn't been used would be easier to filter than the crud left from say a fryer?

Anyone here run there diesel on Kerosene?

Just found THIS. Anyone wanna split 1/2, 1/3, 1/4's ???? £748.50 for 1000 litres, or 74.85p per litre.

You get a 1000l for around £600, so i have been told ;)

Group buy haha

89p per liter ha,why not convert to lpg,44p per liter at the pump, come on jason telluswhat we need to convert

44p/litre, but petrol economy figures. If we're getting 60mpg to your 30 then we're nearly equal, and we've got all that torque :D

jason actually gets better figures than when running his o diesel i think

I've looked online but can't seem to find a comprehensive list of places where biodiesel can be bought...... Anybody know of one???

Cheers

Dave.

Anyone here run there diesel on Kerosene?

Now there is a very good question.

I've read on another motoring forum, that kerosene can be used as a thinning agent for your veggy oil to help with starting problems etc.

I don't know how true this is, and more to the point, i don't no where you can purchase it from, or the legaity issues with using it in diesel powered car.

Any takers on this one?

My mate is running his 55 plate Fabia vRS on a mix of approx 25% Shell, and 75% pump bio diesel, and has been doing so for the last 5 weeks.

The report coming back to me is that he finds the car considerably more responsive under acceleration, but no difference in mpg. NO starting up issues.

The pump bio fuel is APPARENTLY a 50% mix with the usual diesel anyway. Don't know if that's normal or not.

His wallet seems to be benefiting too at the moment @85p pl

He's running his off roader...a 1996 Tdi Land Rover Disco 300, on aprox 2/3rds pump bio and 1/3rd Asdas veggy oil, and has been for the past 6 months with NO ill effects. Once again. appears to be more responsive, but a bit slower on initial cranking up when cold.

Cheers mate,

I've not got a supplier very local to me..... Nearest is about a 20 minute drive away..... looking at their website it says the biodiesel is approx 5p litre cheaper so it'd only be an approx £2ish saving per tank assuming you put 100% bio in...... Is that about right???? I know every penny counts but i'm not currently that desperate to save £2 a tank and have to go out of my way to do it.

Cheers

Dave.

Biodiesel Outlets in the UK

Section on 'cars ok on bio diesel'

In terms of official compatibility, despite the majority of diesel vehicles on the road being fine on 100%, only a handful of companies will officially approve their vehicles for 100% use. The companies that have approved 100% biodiesel are VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda. They have approved all their cars built between 1996 and 2004 on 100% use of ”RME” Biodiesel (Biodiesel made from Rapeseed) providing it meets the specification DIN41606 (which was later replaced by EN14214).

Not really worth it. Even at 50mpg(ish) you're gonna use near on a gallon in a 40 min round trip. At £5/gallon(ish) you're not saving, unless you happen to pass the place without needing the special trip. It's why I can't just go fill up as it's a 50 mile 'round trip for me, negating any potential £5 saving :o
