Groaning Noise when Turning Steering Wheel

Featured Replies

Hey everyone

Had this for a while but it's starting to become noticeable now... when I turn my wheel at slow speeds; such as pulling out of a parking space, I get a groaning noise as I turn it to the left or right.

The only way I can describe it is the sound of a really annoying groaning noise that an door makes when it isn't oiled.

Any ideas?

Had this on both my MkII's and understand it to be 'normal'. Only happens on full lock though so not really an issue imho.

I had the same thing this morning.

Slow speed, lock to lock and sounded like brakes were sticking.

Car seems ok though:)

Could be I need some 'elbow grease';)

There was a problem with steering racks on earlier cars but yours shouldn't be affected by that.

As the others have said they do make some noises, my 57 plate does.

Cheers guys

I'll keep an eye on it :)

Mine does this too. Will mention it to the dealer when it gets serviced but my mind is set at rest now.

I had a car that had a groaning noise whenever I turned the wrong way, as well, so I had the garage remove the wife and it is solved it instantly.

Come to think of it, all my cars were the same until I applied this simple solution.

Does mean you cannot go home though.

Yes, mines been doing it for a while too. Appears to be worse when the car is cold.

Power Steering Pump

I get this on full lock on m y current chariot, as well as ALL the other ones work have supplied me, and on my vRS

Well, its P-S Pump when its almost on lock and turning on the spot...

Just got my Octavia RS serviced - the mechanic seemed to think it was the newish brake pads rubbing on something to do with the handbrake (some sort of locking plug in the disc)... He said they'd have to change the rear discs to get rid of the sound but it wasn't actually doing any harm.

I got a new rack for this issue as apparently it was causing a power drain etc.

No such issues with my car and its an earlier model with green brakes

On my previos car, Toyota Avensis 1.8VVTi, I've had the same problem. Went to dealer over and over and they kept telling "It's normal". Sold the car (so many problems from new) with a year and a half, and 17.000km on the clock. Never again.

Car sold with steering groaning. I've sold it to one second-hand cars dealer and he understood the groaning staight on. No problems, I said, car still has a year and a half warranty. No such an issue on my Octy.

Toyota? - Never again.:thumbdwn:

Mine also does this and a little birdie told me recently that there was a Skoda TSB out for this very issue.......Might be worth a call to your local friendly stealer for a chat and investigation.....:)

For sure, worse when cold.........:(

mine does it more when everything is warm rather than cold

Broken spring?

I broke the end off one of mine and it would make a groaning creaking sound as it moved in the top mount. No other symptoms of a broken spring other than the massive bang when it happened.

Could be a strut top bearing needing regreased, I'm told when they get stiff and groan you should expect a broken spring sometime down the line as the added stress from the stiff bearing causes torsional stress.

Probably true enough, I've replaced both springs this year grrrr and the bearings were pretty dry.
