Best portable sat-nav?

Featured Replies

The Mad Wife wants a portable sat-nav, but as there is a plethora of brands out there, I am wanting the easiest one to use, as I am easily confused, and techincally inept.

Any advice on the best one to go for?

I have been offered a Road Angel at a reasonable price, and it seems ok, but are they any good?

TIA.

Garmin :)

I have a Garmin Nuvi 250, I love it :)

Tom tom for me,

one in my car and a basic one i use for work, never had any issues and imo couldn't be easier to use,

Shaun.

as a profesional driver , driving about 2000 miles per week i would say tom tom 1 its cheap,if you keep it on fastest route it gets you there easy, and its so simple even my dad can use his after an hour of messing(he had his last phone 3 years and still couldn't drive it)

That chicago 66 looks like the old TomTom range.

TomToms are probably the easiest to use Graham. If not the new Navman units look pretty swish :)

I don't have my own sat nav (as many of you may be aware :o) but I have borrowed my friend's Tom Tom 1 a couple of times and I managed to use it fine. It's pretty straight forward, all the buttons are pretty obvious etc.

I have this too. Its very easy to use and very reliable

got a tom tom 700 , its well good beats the inbuilt one in my navara, always got us there spot on

I have only met your sane wife Mr G, but I am sure your mad wife is just as nice. My Sat Nav is trans-portable (MDF2), only problem it is bolted into my Octy

My wife has a split personality....

Today she has been a cross between Atilla the Hun, and Dora Bryan ( not a pleasant combination, and god knows who she will be tomorrow...)

My Fabia has an MFD, and she keeps wanting to borrow it, so she MUST have her own ( sat-nav that is ) to preserve my car from premature destruction:rofl:

You forgot to mention your wife is also part Saint, well she must be to have the patience needed to put up with your madness:P:rofl:

You now think you are Miss Understood!!! You Mr Grumpy! You are schizophrenic man/woman

Garmin Nuvi 250W (4.25 inch display) from a customer review "...unit itself uses sirf's star iii chipset, which is impressive for the price. Some more expensive units, albeit with more features, mp3 etc, use an older chipset. This one is very sensitive and ensures good reception, even in poor gps signal areas, make sure your sat nav has this, as it is not made clear on them."

Price 230 euro (plus S&H) here also Komplett.ie - Garmin NUVI 250W Europe GPS

Sounds like good value if the review is accurate

Garmin nuvi 200 for uk or nuvi 250 for europe.

I work for halfords and these are by far the best sat navs we sell.

Tomtom customer service is non existant!

i have used a few now, cheap nav man thing that was total crap, my dads tom tom 1, my brothers Garmin c510 and the kenwood one in my car(runs on Garmin software) and the Garmin ones are bar far the best to use. the tom tom is very good in most places but a couple of rather annoying habits of it drive me mad

stupid things really like once you have picked a route and started it there is no official way to cancel that route, even turning it off an on again it carries on. the only way we have found is to start entering a new route and then cancel half way through

Tom tom works for me :)

Seconded / thirded / whatever...

I would strongly recommend the TomTom Go 720.

Stop Press - new model

Eaves Dropper SatNav

Features :-

Latest Key Hole satellite links (extra packs of Optrex optional)

Extended POI (Points Of Interest)-function buttons

P.rotect - alerts of proximity to credit card machines and checkouts

P.eek - transmits voice data from inside the car. Depending on data throughput you then have two further options available :-

P.eed - purges My Favourites of known haunts (Pubs, friends, acquaintances) - mode is activated by increased pressure and speed on buttons by operator. Also actuates P.rivacy mode.

This is guaranteed to give you several hours for recovery as it diverts driver to routes that even a mono-cyclist mountain rambler would disdain.

Erm, you just touch the screen then cycle to the page that has the "Clear Route" button, then press it, hey presto, route cleared.

We use many different sat-navs on our cab fleet, and one make that consistantly out shines all others, in all areas, is the tom tom range, they are plainly and simply the best.

I would recomend going for the Tom Tom 1 personally, mine has been dropped, punched, submersed in orange juice (seriously), and generaly abused but still never, ever misses a beat and works out where it is from a dead cold flat battery start in seconds.

Another vote for the TomTom One. Use them at work, never let us down.

Have a look here for price check Compare GPS Prices £127 for TomTom One GB with £10 accessory voucher, suggest using it for a case.
