Colin_G - I'm going to guess that you've never encountered a situation where one side of the lane was more slippery, but not for an obvious reason, than the other? In that case, ABS can be triggered, but still let you brake harder and more controllably, than a plain system will.

yes hence why i said:

ABS = helps stabilise the car when braking hard on uneven surfaces or during an emergency stop.

ok i should have put the word "grip" in there somewhere, but i know firsthand the benifits of ABS..

Come on Chris, that was one of the basic things taught when I did my advanced driving. All braking and accelerating should be done either before you enter the corner or as you leave it, not mid corner, unless you WANT to either go off or have a bit of fun.

Depends on your school of thought I guess. I tend to favour using plenty of power (booting if you will) just before I start turning into a corner and staying on that power all the way through. Of course, you have to compensate with a lower entry speed, but even with that, it's still a significantly quicker way through a corner because you're on the power for longer and the car also feels more stable.

Likewise, it is perfectly feasible to brake into or during the corner and I've found this particularly useful on a corner with a slight crest just after the apex where a dab of brake with the left foot pulls the nose of the car down ready to apply power over the crest.

Life is not black and white :D

Chris

Very true, but you have experience and training on your side.

Get most drivers on the road doing that and they'll be in a bush/wall/other car... take your pick.

Out of bush/wall/other car.....

Bush please, but that isn't usually an expression you would hear me use :P

You forgot to include bike in your list!

You lot are soooo boring with all this talk of driving slowly. Go faster, go faster, rar rar rar!

Go faster, go faster, rar rar rar! BANG !!! SMASH !!!

Do you need a spare engine or other parts for a fabia, or just fancy a leather interior for yours?

Not my van :P

Already got leather ;) And why would I want a noisy diesel engine?

When I had my Astra (bog standard 1.4, 1995 shape) it did understeer a fair bit (only when I really did decide to push the chassis). This was after the tyres were changed from 155/80 R13 to 170/75 R13 or was it 175/70..... I really can't remember

It's skidded round a bend on black ice - Went round a bend on a dark country road (not too fast mind but fast enough!) and the car skidded round a bend lucky not to hit the stone wall either side!!!!

My Skoda Felicia I managed to spin on a corner near where I worked (a quiet industrial estate)

This was a day after I bought the car too. Took a damp left hand bend a little too enthusiastically and the car spun.

Although if I take the same bend I have felt the car twitch but its never spun again.

In germany for your driving test, they blow your tyres out and everything and you have to be able to control it:thumbup:
Really? How do they do that then - is it a simulator or one of those things that jacks a car up onto casters? Or do they shoot your tyres out when you're not expecting it...?

I've often thought that having car simulators to simulate emergencies (like flight simulators for pilots) would be a very good way to learn...

umm, slow down :)
:iagree:

driving too fast for the conditions

Sorry, but +2! Also, a skid course won't be much use when you're understeering towards the outside of a bend, which is what I'm guessing happened. ABS and ASR should take care of most low-speed skid situations that a session on a skidpan will help with, so in the absence of ESP the only real solution is to slow TF down...

Sorry again, but it's my 2ps...

[edit] Oh, and if you do have ESP, it still isn't an excuse for driving like a t!t. You don't go crashing into walls just because you have seatbelts and airbags... [/edit]

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Id have to say slow down to! But if you are feeling feisty then get ur suspension sorted out and get your self a ARB from jabba. Also get your self some toyo t1-r's as they are very good in the wet!

Failing that, find a big car park at night and teach your self!:D

Devon Driver Centre (exeter) runs a skidpan course where they jack up a car on a trolley affair. I had great fun doing the course many moons ago, but it was also an insight into all types of skidding, and the wonders of controlling steering with/without ABS. :)

In the rain, simply slow down. :) There is much less traction and a higher propensity to skid therefore. Keep speed down to match the conditions.

ASR won't save your ar*e, more likely it will cause a massive problem as it tries to correct the car the same time you do.

As said above slow down!

Other handy tips would be to make sure your tyres are good all around and generally to not drive like a tool in bad conditions.!

Slow down (again). Don't fall into the trap of thinking ESP/ASR will save you: It won't. Don't boot it or brake hard on wet corners.

Well thank you all :finger:

Except all of the people who answered my Question

For everyone who judged me (Driving to Fast).... Before I made my way home I realised that yes the road and driving conditions are tretrous and there is a **** load of surface water around! and also blocked up drains :D

On the B roads I was doing 25 (set cruise) speed limit 30. On the duel carriage way speed limit 50, I was approching 40. Oh yeah the incident happened in straight road.

I tell you what boys an girls if you were driving behind me, you would of over taken me

Some of you "need to take a leaf out of you own book"

And thanks for the advice on car set up`s... I`ve got a ARB and front strut but yes I am looking into some Eagle F1s for the front and not sure for the rear`s

Oh and it aint nice to be judged

Thanks again Everyone for replying :handshke:

Do you know what caused the incident and what actually happened? Details in the original post were a bit sketchy.... standing water, black ice, etc and what caused you to skid?

Chris

Well thank you all

Like Chris said are you sure you didn't hit standing water? That and cruise control are not a good combination.

yes hence why i said:

Ok, I read "...on uneven surfaces..." as meaning "bumpy".

ASR = for people who cant drive properly.

ESP = for stabilising the car in an emergency situation.. and saving people who cant drive properly.

ABS = helps stabilise the car when braking hard on uneven surfaces or during an emergency stop.

if *any* of these intervene while driving on the road and its not a genuine emergency situation, then your driving too fast for the road conditions, end of story.

[*ding*]

Is the correct answer.

Like Chris said are you sure you didn't hit standing water? That and cruise control are not a good combination.

In fact, the manual specifically warns against using cruise control in poor conditions.

I am looking into some Eagle F1s for the front and not sure for the rear`s

Good choice of tyre, but I am hoping that you will be fitting them to the rear also. don't mismatch the tyres, it's not a good idea.

EDIT: does a Fabia vRS SE have ESP?? If so, you MUST have the same tyres all round or it won't work properly.
