Key problem with a car for 'highdays and holidays':

lack of noise / drama / effort

I'd want a fair bit of the first, some of the second and for the car to reward my input of the third :)

You don't have to have a diesel to have immense torque, not when large capacity petrol engines are available at this budget.

Take the blinkers off ;)

C'mon, noise, drama etc is all well and good - but, in the long term is wearing.

Seriously, do you not despise the prats who make so much noise and get virtually nowhere when you yourself have a car that would despatch them with ease - without any fuss / noise / drama. ?

For a Grand Touring car (in the truest definition) I'd say a BMW 335D etc would be the nearerst thing to perfection.

The point is there is no sacrifice to be made here - you have immense torque, brill overtaking power, lack of noise / drama / effort - much like a tweaked Fabby but so much more powerful.

Although it does weigh a lot so it's not going to be as responsive or rewarding, imho :D Plus it has too many electronic driver aids :P

Ok I'm the most petrol hating person around here I think, and even I would say for a fun car you want a nice exhaust note!

Something with a v8 in it would be good, wonder how much the older astons are these days?

I have to say no diesel would make it onto my shortlist, if running costs aren't a consideration.

For reliability, space and convertibleness at that price then it can only be a Boxter really. A bit run-of-the-mill but it sounds like that's what you want, even though it is a high day and holiday car.

Personally I would consider something cheaper and a bit more left field such as a supercharged or turbocharged Mk1 MX5 (already a classic but then I'm biased!) or something like a Westie or Caterham but they lose out on the practicality front.

What you really need is a boring diesel estate that's capable of carrying all the luggage and towing the out-and-out track weapon around ;)

Imagine getting 60BHP out of a standard air-cooled 850 cc twin - back in the 50's!

And cheap, too - seems as a decent car could be got for less than £ 5,000.

Or bend the rules and have both a Citroen SM and a CX GTi Turbo2 (in this case I've got 5 or 10 grand left over from the 30).

Trouble with something like that is they can apparently be very temeramental and, if you only use it now and then is unlikely to be in any way reliable.

Yep, was featured on 5th Gear not that long ago, as a surprisingly accessible Ferrari.

Perhaps not that surprising though. 4 seater Ferraris never really hold their value, and coupled to this there's the running costs of a V12. My view is that they're come down in price to that level for a reason....

Fine, but V12 Ferraris have come down to and stuck at that sort of price; it'll cost you for running, not depreciation, now.

Think I could be tempted to go with Tom vrs and go for a Monaro VXR.

But the Ferrari 456 GT, a seriously nice car, and does tick all the boxs.

I think "your" car is based on the Nissan Sunny, so with a slightly modded 2.0 16V GTi engine 225 BHP shouldn't be out of reach :D
