car for highdays and holidays

Featured Replies

If you had £30k to spend on any car you wanted for use on highdays and holidays (so ignore running costs) what would you have?

Classic eg E type

Sports eg Boxter

extreme eg TVR Cebera

Supercar eg Ferrari 348

Triumph TR6.

Also ignoring a degree of practicality?

I would hunt out a 3 or 4 year old Audi RS6. :)

I guess it depends how practical it needs to be and how much of a bhp junky you are, but one of the best driver's cars I've had the privilege of driving is an old-skool 911 Carrera CS (964 shape). Other more extreme options are Caterhams (a few bike engined ones if you've had your brave pills), Ariel Atom (supercharged if you've had your brave pills), Noble, etc.

For more family friendly cars, 30k is decent M3/M5 money or RS4 or Monaro or EVO FQ-xxx or Skyline R34 and a big tuning budget.

So much choice

Only practicalities to consider are

reliability, must have turn key reliability

Comfort, must be comfortable enough to cover '00's miles a day

Practicality, must have space for 2 and lugage for 2 weeks

I believe sir has just described a Honda NSX... :D

Rob.

clicky

forgetting the bit about reality!

MkII Jag..... pure class

Audi Ur-Quattro 20v, Tornado Red, Nothelle tuned.

Do postmen really get that much??

I like the Honda NSX idea... :D

I think for me it would have to be a Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz (Listed as third generation)... lovely v8 american convertible with italian styling mixed in!

But this may be a tad impracticle (fuel consumption in mind) but cretainly big enough for your needs!

Cadillac Eldorado

Skyline GT-R R34

69 Dodge Charger

Honda RC30

Ducati Desmosedici RR

Impreza 22B

As much as I hate to say it, turn key reliablity pretty much rules out a TVR. Trouble with some of the classics whilst buying them is cheap enough (relatively) the running costs can quickly mount up e.g. IIRC some versions of the 348 require the engine to be removed for a cambelt change.

Nissan Skyline has got to be on the list, and an NSX too but personal favourite would be a Monaro 6.0 litre, or even a Lotus Carlton.

Mmmm Sir has good taste....

Thats more like it :D

I think whatever it is... it needs to be a convertible and have a beefy 2.0+ engine or preferebly some 6 cylinder+.

Or theres a nice Nissan Figaro for sale near me ive seen driving around a fair bit lol (1.0 turbo, automatic gearbox, air con, cd player, open top, joke suggestion though really!!).

Figaro

How about like a Saab 93 aero 2.0t or something along those lines??

Noble would do me nicely :)

Monaro VXR. :)

It would be a BMW M5 for me :D

Like this one...

This is determined by the number of damaged packages :D

One with a spullchecka perferably :P

Seriously, a Beemer (probably an estate) - and defo one of the new diesels that offer petrol performance (+ probably even better torque) without the banshee wails / motorway engine noise etc.

Older 911 for me probably, given the choice. Or an E46 M3 CS/CSL perhaps?

I have to say no diesel would make it onto my shortlist, if running costs aren't a consideration.

I think you'd need to answer the practicality/seating question first, before finetuning the possible list :)

Steve

For me it has to be a mint E30 M3 Sport Evolution (if there are any mint ones left!)

A Luddite that drives a diesel ? .......................

The point is there is no sacrifice to be made here - you have immense torque, brill overtaking power, lack of noise / drama / effort - much like a tweaked Fabby but so much more powerful.

It really is a no-brainer.
