Locking nuts for steel wheels ?

Featured Replies

Greetings, fellow Fabia owners!

I just got me an '04 1.4 petrol, and I'm looking to fit some locking wheel nuts for the OEM steel wheels ('coz once upon a time I had a wheel stolen from an Astra - serves me right for parking in Woolwich, I suppose...)

So I went to Halfords (!), bought the recommended nuts, got 'em home to find they were M12 instead of the required M14.

Went back, checked the fitment, and sure enough, the manufacturer has made a mistake. Trying to get the muppets in there to give a refund is something I won't be repeating.

The Skoda website says they do locking nuts for alloys - will these fit on standard steel wheels ? (I wonder if the length is different, to accommodate thicker alloy castings, as opposed to thinner pressed steel.)

Any advice ?

Cheers !

Sorry don't know....bump!

I think that the OEM bolts are the same length regardless of whether alloy or steel wheels are fitted, so long as they are OEM alloys that is.

really cant believe your fitting locking wheel nuts to steel wheels, do you live in iraq?

Hummm, hopefully it means that someone elses wheels get nicked instead of your's. My wife's Polo has alloys but a steel spare so I think that you are okay using the alloy locking nuts. I don't think that VAG are as stupid as Ford - if I am correct, Ford supply a short set of bolts to be used with the steel spare - well at least they used to - not very handy design feature!

all the fords i have worked on have had studs and nuts not bolts. but i haven't worked on all of them, not by a long shot.(mk2 fiesta, mk1 focus, mk6 fiesta, new transit, sierra saphire, think thats it).

Had something similar happen to me years ago - answer - go get an Allen key nut, longer than needed - go to scrappy , get a wheel nut. Fit wheel nut on long Allen stud, and tighten ---then sit back and laugh as they try to nick wheels.

The bolts for the steels and alloys are not interchangeable as the seating angle isn't the same :(

Does that mean I should have an extra set of bolts for my steel spare or is that the reason I am limited to 50 mph with the spare fitted? (BTW the tyres seem to be identical which puzzled me somewhat - I'm easily puzzled)

My little diesel has alloys with locking nuts, and also a steel spare ,so I should imagine that the locking nut will fit both-otherwise the spare would not be legal.

Alternate method of locking is to get an allen stud with a nut and tighten that on --studs found on the front suspension of vauxhalls - this arrangement is a cheap way of stopping opportunist wheel nickers.I had to resort to it a few years ago when it was a game with kids to slacken off wheel nuts(don't ask why)

On VAG OEM alloys the seating angle is the same as steels and as long as the bolts go it by a minimum of 6 turns they are fine.

Just checked the manual for info --very little detail.

I sit corrected.:)

Muzo,

I may be able to help - purchased a set of locking wheel nuts for my VRs only to find they already have them. Doh!

Send me a private mail.

Regards

Ian
