Hi Neil

Been driving a 1.6 for over 2 years now, quite impressed with it, get @37 mpg around town, 40 on a run, generally an economical car to run and pleasant to drive, more power would be nice but that applies to any car - even the vRS's on here! Dont think that you would be disappointed with one as long as you make sure that its the 102 bhp version!

I have a 1.6 MK1 estate and i like it, as Stubax says good MPG for the size of engine/car, I can get 42 to 45 MPG on a run though probably due to a more aerodynamic shape :D Round town I get 30 to 40 MPG. Refinement and comfort are good it is just the noisy tyres that let my car down though.

Big car for the engine - I only get 28-34mpg round town, but then I drive like a ****...on longer journeys can get higher MPGs (45ish).

Pretty refined and quiet, and you can only get the 102bhp engine these days.

Take one for a test drive, and definitely get the SE over the normal Ambiente, as the extras you get cost less than it would be to spec them as optional extras.

Rob.

I own both a 180bhp vRS and a 75bhp 1.6. Obviously the vRS is more powerful but I find the 1.6 to be surprisingly agile, and delivers a punchier drive than some seemingly more powerful engines. Am driving my father-in-laws 113 bhp Ford Focus at the moment while the vRS is in the garage and to be honest the 75bhp Octy is faster, lighter and generally much more fun to drive. Makes me wonder why so many people rave about Focus handling. the 75bhp 1.6 only weakness is fuel economy around town, although it is fine on longer M-way journeys. I would imagine the 102 bhp engine is more than powerful enough for anyone other than a performance car fan.

The gears seem to be quite "short" compared to Ford/Vauxhalls...makes it accelerate easily enough in any gear, though personally I wouldn't mind an overdrive gear for the motorways on it...

I was quite surprised when Rob took me out in his car and told me it was only a 1.6 engine. The effortless low down pull it seems to have make it feel much more like a 2.0 litre engine and as a result it's a very relaxed and comfortable car. Just a shame about the body roll ;)

Thanks guys, sounds fairly impressive. I'm considering swapping the micra for one. MPG sounds pretty good, I drive like a granny anyway. I'm a fan of low down pull, have a habit of driving around slowly in 3rd in the micra and it just pulls almost from stand still, you try that in an Octavia vRS
