vrs cold start

Featured Replies

hi everyone is a rough cold start in icy or cold weather normal on the vrs vehicles anything can be done to help with this? whats this cage mod???

Well its different to how it starts when the temperature is more normal, I agree.

Found myself that the cage mod helps a bit. It is well documented on here via the search but involves using dielectric grease to mke a more efficient connection between the MAF sensor and the plug which plugs into it.

Has worked for me and I found it better to use more rather than less.

you could have a faulty glow plug

Or coolant temperature sensor?

I think it's perfectly normal for it to sound like it's fueled by spanners for the first 5 mins on a cold day.

If left to idle whilst de-icing, mine also smokes like an absolute biatch. 2 miles later - normal service is resumed.

Yeah I've noticed the PD engines do seem a bit rough when cold starting but settle down a bit when they start to get warm. Wouldn't worry about it if it starts straight away on the key, unless there's an obvious lumpy idle or white smoke coming out of the exhaust.....

What would white smoke suggest Chris?

What would white smoke suggest Chris?

I think it's that it's burning oil which would suggest something like the turbo oil seals are gone. Sure one of the more technically minded folks will be along to elaborate :D

Chris

blue smoke= burning oil

black smoke= unburnt fuel (running rich)

White "smoke"= likely condensation in the exhaust system or possible coolant leaking via Headgasket.

Roughly

Mine always has white smoke on cold mornings, our vw van does too, not as much as my car though...

The way to tell if a turbo is going is if it smokes when its warm :)

It's not smoke, that's the warm exhaust gas hitting the cold air, just like you breathing out.

My vRS sounds like a knackered transit in cold weather for a few mins.

yeah, just this week mines been sounding like a cat is clinging on to the cam shaft for dear life just after starting up... after it gets to normal operating temp its absolutely fine though.. i tend to leave it warming up for 5 mins before i leave in the mornings just so its warm inside as well too :)

I wouldn't worry - they all sound like a liquidiser full of ball-bearings on a very cold morning!

The most annoying thing I find about the VRS on cold mornings is how long it takes for the heaters to actually warm up... my record before reaching 90C on the temp gauge was 17 miles...

mine runs spot on after a cold start , just slightly noisier , but nothing untoward

Yeah, mine sounds like a knackered Ford Transit in the cold mornings too... the glow plug light takes longer to go out and something else weird I've noticed - when it's really cold after you turn the ignition and the car runs the quick self-diagnostic check on the functions (dash lights all come on and then go out again), upon starting, my ABS and ASR lights come back on again for a second or two before going out... is this normal?

yes

Not just the diesel engines that do this. I had my first experience of the 1.4 16v in cold weather this week, and when I started her up, I thought something was wrong, there was such a loud knocking from the front. 2 minutes later, though, all was well.
