De-Cat or Sports Cat?

Featured Replies

Just wondered who if anyone pays £400 for a 'sports cat' and why when a damn good de-cat pipe is about £90?

Thought I would ask after the guy in the shop where I bought my Miltek system looked at me like I had grown an extra head when he tried to sell me a sports cat at £400 (£100 more than the system cost) and I said " dont want none of that **** on mi car, want to get rid of the gas not pay a fortune for an half arsed gas flow system "

I understand the MOT issue but up here in dark n damp Yorkshire no one really bother's bout emmisions once you tell them it has a de-cat pipe on. They just want your MOT fee! I'm sure most other places are the same.

The green issue is totally invalid if you have a sports cat on as youv'e done it to make your car faster, use more petrol, burn more rubber etc etc and not to save the plannet.

The Law issue doesnt really come into it either cos if your gonna put performance parts on then your gonna break laws such as obeying the speed limits, and plod aint likely to dismantle your exhaust at side of road to see if you got 100, 200 or No cells in there.

Engine management light - LOL, mines on all the time, but if you know why its on it aint a problem, if anything goes seriously wrong it will go into limp mode anyway. Used to turn it off all the time but it just came back on, overfuelling issues from Lambda sensors. no surprise there.

The manufacturer's all state that the sports cats dont interupt/restrict gas flow, 100 cel, 200 cel, your neighbours cat! anything in the gas flow will disrupt/restrict it.

My mate bought one for his Integra Type R, however he is gullable and stupid and admitted he bought it cos the guy in the shop said he should. Told me it was nice n shiny, I held it up and said look its full of crap, should we knock it out with a hammer and chissel! He was going to let me too!!!

Would like to know if anyone buys these and why? ( except my mate for reasons mentioned above )

I'm sure this will get a reaction from the green party, however they shouldnt be driving VRS's they should be drivin them bloody Hybrid things that get in your way on the M1!:finger:

I bought a 2.5" decat downpipe for £85, cut out the resonator "decat" box and replaced it with a 200CEL CAT from the States - £75 delivered.

The cat is half as dense as the standard one, restriction whilst there will be some, is small in the overall picture, and no problems come MOT time, so fit and forget. :)

Ive done the full decat before on my clio and now have a sports cat on the octy.

I know they are different cars but still the same thing applies. If you know a good tester then you are fine regardless of what you fit.

The only thing you would need to worry about is if it will pass a road side emissions test and im sure it will as my brother got caught in one and passed with no cat (again in a clio)

Ive gone sports cat as its too much messing about when it comes to mot time and im not a fan of disrupting my full exhaust system on my drive while i scrabble around under the car

constantly having an EML on isnt fantastic, whether you know the reason behind it or not.

Lambda sensors are there to monitor AFR and can correct slight imperfections in the fuel - ie running too lean or running too rich.

Ateotd, its your car, and you're free to do what you want, so good luck with that :)

Like the others have said..........

Do you want to swap them at MOT time?

Do you want ELM light on all the time?

Do you want to risk failing a roadside test if stopped by the police?

Will you get any real gains over a sports cat?

I would not think running a decat on a generic map would be any good?

I had the ELM light on my Ibiza TDi (EGR) all the time and it mad me mad :(

With all the MOT results going computerised I think it's harder for them to turn a blind eye - aren't the emissions officially logged on a database now?

Either way, if you car can pass an MOT cat test, with or without a cat, then it is fine.

That much is true yes.

And Chris, they can just cancel that test and take the readings from another car ;)

Had a friend who had his decat Scooby measured in a similar way. Shame that the donor car failed on emissions

D'OH!!

A lad at work de-cat'd his scooby, and ended up having to put it back on because of engine map issues. Once re-mapped though it was ok, but before he did have quite a few problems.

mmm interesting as ive seen them too on ebay for 90 quid. would go nice with my new manifold

i think it would make a bit of cifference as its less restrictive, tbh you only have to worry about mot time, why would the cops suspect a skoda having a de-cat?? honestly lol

NO..............;)

Speaking as a rather strict MOT tester:D

That raised some points! Police round here are more concerened with Boy racers in saxo's lowered to point where suspension dont work !! Like VRS-Si said the plod dont think of skoda's as been tune up material! I got an unmarked police car pull up at the side of me in a petrol station, the plod asked if my car had any other speeds other than fast! I was quite pleased! Lol He then told me he didnt mind me going fast as long as it was out of town. Top bloke, left it at that after I promissed not to put optimax in it. The MOT station where I go the tester just presses a button on his keypad and doesnt check the emmisions if you tell him its got a decat on so I dont think the national computer logs anything other than if the car has an mot or not (I may be wrong) . The £90 de-cats off e-bay are awesome for the money, had to shorten mine slightly to fit the Miltek system though and definately no problems with the custom map. Its never missed a beat and we kept hooking the ecu up to the snap on diagnostics gadget to reset the engine management light till we got bored of doing it, just left it on now. car is fine. Guy that tuned it was well impressed and he just laughed when I mentioned sports cats. Dont suppose there are any real HP gains if there are they would be very minimal, however the £300 saving has to be worth it.

When i fitted my blueflame system and sports cat i did a few runs before and after measuring bhp /torque with vag-com.

Result 9 bhp increase and 9 lb/ft increase

VOSA can pull you for an emmissions test, fail and you walking till you get it sorted out. They were floating around in a town near Oxford yesterday which was a suprise as they never normally venture off the A34 round here.

I know in Manchester they regularly pull drivers in and the probe stuck up the exhaust, so dont think cos you are up north or you havent seen vosa about that you wont ever get pulled.

ive never seen vosa up in the north before

they've been in Hull before, and infrequently on the A1079 road to York.

Always see vosa on the humber bridge laybys by the toll booths
