Audi R8 V Porsche GT3 Clarkson's Supercars

Featured Replies

Lovely stuff, thanks for the link

Ahh Sabine, I'm sure you could have tried harder :D

Steve

It's not a bad dvd that one, bit of car p0rn

I guess the Stig HAD to win really, otherwise all credibility would be lost, but he was going gentle on her, going wide into corners to let her through. Overtaking her on the outside made me chuckle. I know who I'd rather go to bed with though!

Oh, and I bet Clarkson felt a bit stupid!

You've been to bed with Clarkson?!?:P

Damn... my innermost desire revealed!

GT3 is a awesome car

Excellent vid - thanks for the linky. :)

I think I'd rather have the Porsche though . . .

Just finished watching the DVD,

Oh that Bugatti.

As much as I like the R8 (and it is an absolutely gorgeous car) it hasnt got the history and legend that the 911 has. I wonder if Audi will still be making the R8 in 40 years time?

it hasnt got the history and legend that the 911 has

But the only similarities between the 40-year-old version and the current is:

1. It being called a 911.

2. It still having the engine in the wrong place.

So surely it would be rather like buying a Honda Civic based on the fact they haven't changed the name of that for a long time either, so it has history?

Wth regards legend...that's just buying a "stronger" brand, surely it makes sense to buy a better product regardless of the previous products a company has made?

:rubchin:

Rob.

Well I suppose you could agrue that the 2 companies are very closely related anyway , considering Dr Porsche used to work for Auto Union , and founded VW which now owns Audi , and Porsche own a sizeable chunk of VAG also! :)

I'd still have the 911 over the R8 though , I prefer the sound of the flat 6 over a V8 , its a shame the 911 is no longer aircooled though , as it lost a bit of its soul when they allowed water to cool the engine.

If I could afford it, I'd be having a GT3 (with black seat belts) because it's a more driver focussed machine as well as being better on track.

Anyone know what spec the Audi's brakes are? I'm surprised that Sabine was able to outbrake the Porsche which is lighter and also renowned for having some of the finest brakes in the business .... or was the Stig just toying with her? :D

Chris

No but I know that when they did the comparison on Top Gear they said the R8's brakes as standard were as good as the Porsche with the ceramic brake option!

Done a bit of Googling and apparently the R8 has brake assist coupled to 8-pot calipers on the front and 4-pot calipers on the rear with a disc of TBD size. Ceramic brakes are also a TBC option.

The 911 on the other hand has measly 330mm front and rear with 4 pot calipers.

Chris

I would love to see that again, but on a slightly wet or damp track...

On the whole a great DVD just a shame I don't have a supercar :(

I watched this DVD over xmas dinner at my mates lol! I too think sabine should have tried harder! I wanted it to win :(

Hmm, I think I'd have to disagree with that, being a regular at the Nurburgring gives you a good idea of what seems to make a good track car, and sadly nearly every GT3 at the Nurburgring falls into one of 2 categories -

1. Crashed! or -

2. Seized engine.

Sadly the latter usually results in the former and also= oil spill = dead bikers.

I was just going by the couple of friends with them who've had no problems and regularly track their cars. Will be interesting to see if any of them are tempted away by the R8 :D

Just watched the DVD and really enjoyed it. Loved the bhp-ometer on the Bugatti - wonder if it's possible to retrofit one of those so you can see how much power you have in reserve at any one time

Not sure on the spec of the R8 brakes, but they are huge, 8 pots on the front and 4 pots on the back iirc and i'm sure there was a carbon ceramic option (Porsche does too though no?)!

I took a few pics of them in Geneva last year :D

Edit: Should have read the rest of the thread first, I see you found that already :D

Nurburgring is rather extreme, hopefully they will be fine on a normal track, just tell them to keep a very close eye on oil pressure/temp!

BMW's used to have a BHP meter, only it worked in reverse by telling you how many MPG's you didn't have left!

Rolls Royce have it to, only it's posher and called 'power reserve' lol.

I'm not sure the GT3s have been to the Nurburgring - they have a 911 race car for that ;):D

Lol, i've seen loads of GT3's at the ring, sadly i'd say 90% of them have died there too!!
