Octy dont like spax help needed

Featured Replies

First of all I hope you all had a good Christmas.

Now to my problem. Recently I fitted some spax springs to my 05 octy vrs and oh are they so so ****e. Well I'm assuming its the springs! When at 60+ the car is bouncing over bumps like it wants to take off.

Other mods to the car are poly bushes in the dog bone, wishbones & steering rack (c&r told me not to put them in the rear axle). Audi S3 front upper & lower strut braces. Tyres have been changed to 215/45/17s running at 33psi. Can anyone help me in the best route to take to get a setup that will handle like its on rails but when at speed be stable & not bounce all over the road like Zeebadee on speed!

Sounds like the dampers are shot me ;)

Its probably not the dampers fault (unless they are shot) - what you've done is upset the ballance of the car - the stock dampers are designed to control the standard springs and when fitting stonger, stiffer springs the dampers are not able to control (damp) the movement enough and the car begins to bounce. Its like anything, you have to ballance modifications - check the poundage of the new springs and measure the standard ones - if significantly different there's your problem.

I went the adjustable coilover route but you may find Koni FSD's sort your problem out.

Its also worth bearing in mind that when increasing spring poundage then then standard dampers dont tend to last that long anyway!

Are the springs definitely for the Octy? Only reason I ask is there were a few threads a while back where springs were fitted which had been sold as suitable but were actually designed for the Golf/A3 and resulted in some interesting handling characteristics as a result.

Could also be the dampers but I'm guessing you checked these when you fitted the springs? :)

Also I didn't see a mention of a rear anti-roll bar. The stuff you've mentioned are not going to make huge differences but the big steps are rear roll bar and coilovers! Then play about with bushes. Personally I avoided front braces as I've set my car up to dial out the inherant understeer and see no reason to fit parts that will dial it back in.

I cant find any reference on the SPAX datasheets of the vRS, only the normal 1.8T. The vRS has totally different suspension to the normal Octavias and is already lowered from standard. In fitting these springs, you will indeed upset the handling. I had KW V2 coilovers on my old vRS, and the handling was impressive and perfectly stable at 140MPH.

Sorry , as has already been said , probably the rear springs I think

Not specific to the vRS

Sorry

Sarah

Indeed I've looked at the datasheets and no mention of a VRS fitment. The springs i found claimed to fit a variety of cars including A3, Bora, Leon, Octavia includind 2wd, 4wd and estate all of which have different axle weights and therefore require different poundage. BIN THE SPRINGS MATE.

Sounds likes it bye bye to the spax then. When I checked on Spax web site on fitment they did list a few cars for the springs. Back to the garage then, at least this time it won't take as long as I know what I'm doing now. My mk2 golf gti 16v had avo fully adjustable liked it but it looks like I'l look into coilovers as mentioned. Anti roll bar upgrade will be happening in 08 am I right in saying go for the eibach. Also are C&R enterprises correct in what they say about the rear bushes, when you fit poly's the back end gets a bit lets say playfull??

Why the 215/45 tyres? A 225/45 is nearer the original 205/50. The 215's may mess up your speedo and gearing.

Funny you should mention that the garage where I took the car to to get the tracking sorted asked me the same thing. When I went for new tyres I asked for 225/45/17's after looking on this site but they said why put those on the 215's are closer so trusting them I let them put the wrong ones on. So now thinking when all tyres are goosed go get some 18's or put the 225's on standard rims.

Eibach do not do springs for a vRS

The only ones I have found that do the vRS are the H&R ones

Sorry :(

Sarah

I think the question referred to the Eibach rear ARB..... :)

Chris

 oops

Sorry , I was on the springs stil.....

Wake me up when it is time to think ;)

Sarah

I have Eibach Pro Kit Springs on my VRS, that I was told by Eibach were corect for the VRS. Part number E7909-140. States for Octavia 1.8 and TDI estate. I get good handling with these and my Koni FSD shocks, Although I would like a little lower. I did not see many companies offering specific Octy Mk 1 VRS springs. I think Weitec are another company that sell them.

I was warned off spax by nearly every company i spoke to.

 I bought some set of Weitec springs for my vRS from Awesome last year when a rear spring broke.

I have had the same problem of the rear not being damped enough with standard shocks & uprated springs, so last week I bought some Koni adjustable shocks for the rear.

Now fitted the car feels flatter through the corner & believe it or not with the firmer shocks fitted, the ride feels more comfy:D

In the new year I will buy the Koni adjustable front shocks to match things up:thumbup:

Well its took some time to sort myself out. But the car is going into my mates garage and I'll be fitting the new Weitec coils just hope these do the job. Before anyone says why not KW's its coz there out of my prise range at mo as I'm thinking Lambo 19" galardo's are an option.

I thought Weitecs are rebranded KW's anyway??? could be wrong.

I now have H&R's fitted to my KONI FSD's. All I can say is what a difference after taking off those EIbach's. Much better.
