Fuse blown but no apparent defect?

Featured Replies

Hi all, Discovered a blown fuse in a 1.9 SDI Fabia.

Changed it twice, but it blew again straight away!

Think it may be related to the glow plugs, but am not an expert.

There's no apparent symptom of this problem, so I'm confused

Any idea what's wrong?

Dont like the look of that electrical tape.......

Which fuse is blowing, and when?

I think that you will find that its the third one from the right, also the electrical tape seems to be VAG's way to terminate or finish off where individual wires "appear" from or into plastic sheathing. The original post answered the "when" question - ie they don't know!

All I can tell you about it is it's a 40A fuse.

I wouldn't have even realised it was gone, only for having a poke around the engine one day.

As I said, there's no sign of any problem, but it's bugging me nonetheless.

there will be an electrical system on the car which is not working , check everything is as it should be

Had a Google and the Polo uses a 40A fuse for the ABS hydraulic pump, but it's usually in position 6, rather than position 4, and should trigger the ABS warning light on the dash. The only other reference was on the Golf Mk IV which uses a 40A for Coolant fan control (FC) control module/coolant fan.

Might be worth getting VAG-COM plugged into the car to see if any faults have been logged which might help to narrow it down.

Chris

i had a look through the Haynes for the fuses , in the wiring section it only mentions fuses 2,6 and 7 , but there is only 6 in the picture , Fabia is the same as the Polo , fuse 6 is something to do with the ABS

the cooling fan that ScoobyChris mentioned would be a good place to start as its one of the electrical circuits that is hardly used , so when it goes faulty , you wont know until the car overheats , i.e. no cooling fan

Thanks for the posts, but it looks like I'll have to wait until it can be hooked up to VAG COM to shed some light on this issue.

maybe be an idea to take it into your local dealer and get them to check it out?

Difficult to say from that picture, but is the wire below the blown fuse burnt?

if so that connection may be loose check the nut !!

if that is loose and is drawing a lot of current, then the resistance will be high and draw too much and blow the fuse.

Checked the wire, but it's fine.

Just out of interest I checked the cable for Fuse 3, as it's the same type as for Fuse 4, but could see no difference in the two.

Radiotwo,

I believe when you wrote ' if nut is loose and is drawing a lot of current, then the resistance will be high and draw too much and blow the fuse', you were wrong.

If nut was loose resistance from wire terminal to stud would be higher , but LESS

current would flow , because of this extra resistance now in circuit. Only if the total load taken was to rise considerably (a faulty component ,or short circuit )would the Fuse Blow. (Basic Electronic Theory) .

Hi Spuddy this link may help you its a picture of the fuse panel and what each fuse covers for the Fabia

thats not really of any help as that is a picture of the fuse box inside the car , the fuse that has blown is on top of the battery , under the bonnet

Found this link to a picture of the fuse panel and a list of what each fuse covers hope it helps to isolate the problem Fabia-vrs.com - Fuse Panel Layout

Thanks anyhow, your link is useful nonetheless.

  • 10 years later...

Just to let you's know, dont know if its relivant, but I have a 1.9TDI, and I have Nothing connected to that fuse... What electrical optional extras do you have, I take it it will be something I don't have...

Spuddy last visited the forum in September 2008; it seems unlikely that he's still trying to solve this problem.

For future searchers who might come across this thread, here's a link to a post with all Fabia Mk1 fuses shown, including some in a spreadsheet (just after the UPDATE heading, click on the thumbnails to view bigger) that covers the strip fuses, and blade fuses on the battery. They vary a little depending on production year.
