Octy radiator fans run continuously while ignition is on

Featured Replies

I always wondered about the cooling fans on my pd tdi - they never ever seemed to run. I even marked the position of them a few times just to check. Temp never ever budged from 90, so I forgot about it.

Now I seem to have the opposite problem - as soon as I turn the key both fans start (engine off, cold. Changing A/C off/auto/econ has no effect). They only go off when ignition is off again. It might explain why after sitting in traffic last week then temp dropped from 90 down to about 60 ! I was a bit confused to say the least at the time. Generally though the temp still stays dead on 90.

Does anybody know the likely cause of this and solution/approx cost? When I get back to my laptop I'll be able to check for codes with VAGCOM. I've got a service coming up but I'd like to avoid dealer prices for this if possible.

I did find this Golf/Bora MK4 Fans Repair which sounds like a similar issue. Having never see the fans run before I dont know if mine are running slow or full, but from the noise and air flow I would guess they are definitely at full.

Bentley Publishers Technical Discussion Boards also seems to be pointing in the right sort of direction, but I don't really understand what they're saying?

If your's is a pd 130, then yeah it's the same problem. I had it happen on my Bora. The second fan eventually started pulsing, which i knew was wrong.

Luckly it was fixed under warrenty, but if was out of warrenty it would have cost me almost £400

You could just have a dodgy thermostat. Dont forget that if you have the A/C on, or climate set to auto, then the fans run all the time anyway.

Climate is set to econ usually, but fans run full whatever i set it to. If thermostat was dodgy wouldn't the fans run all the time until battery was dead - ie irrespective of ignition on/off?

 £400 for what???? Its out of warranty now, and yes its a pd130.

Surely its just a dodgy relay somewhere - It was sat on my drive unused for 3 and a bit weeks, I think somethings just got stuck. Nothing seems to actually not work, although fuel consumption is up a fair bit - probably down to fans drawing power all the time.

Damn Vag-Com not working either now (somehow it has decided to change itself into the unregistered version ). I'm giving up and going to bed!!!!!!!!!! :thumbdwn:

I needed a complete new set of raditor fans, and the front end of the car had to come of for them to fit it.

The fan control is part of the fan unit.

Fan tastic  Anybody else had the same problem and had to have the car rebuilt. Surely it should be easier than that to fix :(

Just sat in the car with vag com connected, ignition on and I've got the pulsing. Fan comes on, fan goes off, fan comes on, fan goes off. I think the end is nigh. :thumbdwn:

Right, all sorted on this. Looks like it was a loose connection on the fan controller unit (under battery). Skoda tech fiddled with it and seems to be fine now, even after two weeks.
