wax or polish for alloy wheels

Featured Replies

hi everyone i am wanting to remove to stuborn break dust on my wheels and what to give them a good seeing to with a good polish or wash to protect them and ultimastely remove the imbedded crap any suggestions please on a good make many thanks

Virosol (if you can find it) or maybe WonderWheels to clean them up - both are quite agressive though so be careful.

For protection after this is done, I asked a similar question a few months ago - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/styling-car-care/wheel-protection/88326/

I went for the Chemical Guys stuff in the end, although I haven't had chnace to apply any yet

Try stardrops for cleaning the wheels.

About 70p from sainsbury for a big bottle.

I got the wheel cleaner and wax both from Serious Performance Car care and both have been fantastic on standard alloys and my powder coated BBS rims.

Billberry wheel cleaner, absolutely brilliant stuff and non acidic so it won't harm your alloys. To protect them Jetseal 109. You can find reviews on both on detailingworld.

If you havent cleaned them for a good while I can imagine you will have dirt and brake dust very wel bonded to the surface. A acid based cleaner will get this off but should onlt be used in extreem cases as as mentioned above it doesnt do your wheels much good.

Once they have been cleaned I found a clay bar gets in the cracks of the alloys and also removed tar spots. Then start with the polish, i use menenza final polish 2 for the face, its hard work as its not really practical to use a machine polisher but plent of elbow greese but rings them out nice.

To finish it all off and to protect them I use poor boys wheel sealent. Every year before winter I give them a good 3 coats both inside and out and then top up the face every 3 months.

Clean them thoroughly - some recommendations above.

I used Wonderwheels, then polished with TurtleWax Platinum, then used the Turtlewax Platinum Extra Gloss ( a quite watery acrylic sealant).

Cleaning is now easy peasy - dirt just flies off using microfibre cloth and diluted Wash'nWax in bucket.

after you have got them clean wash regularly with just a wash wax solution.I find that wash wax solution on wheels makes the brakedust easier to hose off by forming a protective wax barrier. Continued use of 'wheel cleaner' products strips the wheels and seems to make them dirtier more quickly and harder to clean.

hi everyone what will remove the yellow kind of stain left from dirt etc etc

It might be worth giving them a going over with a clay bar, this will get rid of the bonded stuff.

If you are going to use wonder wheels then rinse them loads of times as it will eat into the laquer.

The staining should come out but patience is the key. If you can take each wheel off to do it, it will make it easier.

You need to invest in some Megs Wheel Brightener and some Poorboys Wheel Sealant...........

cheers mate that is my intention take each wheel off bring in the house and get on the floor to give it some good rubbing outside at a silly angle in the cold is no god at all ha ha

Poorboys Wheel Sealant has some great reviews, as does Jetseal and also Swissvax Autobahn wax - good luck!

PS Cleaning - Megs Wheel Brightener or P21S or Menzerna (although if they are really grubby, like someone has already said, a clay bar may be necessary).

Hi there.

To be honest I wouldn't recommend using anything with acids in it as it does serious damage to wheels and paintwork if it gets onto it.

I use Poorboys spray and rinse wheel cleaner and wheel sealant. Haven't need to try anything else as it's brilliant.

It is a US product butI get it from a dealer in the uk at very reasonable prices, if you want me to put you in touch with them, let me know!

Regards, Mandy.

Thanks to this thread I just spent £27 on wheel protection bits. :( At least I used the search facility first, eh?
