my car locked me out with the engine running today

Featured Replies

as above...

I got in and pressed the boot button on my key fob. Then I started the engine and set the aircon to demist etc. Next I got out, shut the driver's door and got my deicer from the boot. The problem came when i shut the boot since the whole central locking locked and left me stuck outside the car with the engine running!!!

All my stuff, inc housekeys, was locked in the car. I couldn't remember who skoda assistance was handled by so i crossed my fingers and rang rac. Lucky guess ... they arrived within 40mins or so.

And the outcome was...........?

It's still going outside, but it's nicely warmed up now.

I'm waiting for the diesel to run out.

Can you still stall an engine these days by covering the exhaust until it stops?

So what did the RAC do when they arrived?

Smash the window and get it replace on the insurance

JOB DONE

They will open the door with a rubber wedge, a mallet and a thin rod with a string on the end!

Did you press the boot button on the remote or the doorcard?? EDIT - I see you did it with the key... I think you must have confused the central locking, as when opening the boot with the key the rest of the car stays closed...

On a serious note... the rac did as someone said above...

the guy wedge a couple of little inflatable pads in the door frame and inflated them just enough to fit a long strip of wire down inside to the electric window button. He was very careful and there isn't a mark etc on the vehicle.

I've booked in for a full check next tues at the dealer.

I've no idea why it happened, it may have been 'confused' as mentioned above. However, i did find a bit of windscreen fluid in the boot the other day so i'm wondering if the hose has popped off and confused some sensor in the boot etc.

Anyway, hats off to vw assistance (as they were badged) for arriving relatively prompting during what must have been a busy time of day and getting things sorted quickly.

my VRS did this a few months back , but i hadn't opened the boot, luckily i was in the car when it locked itself,

i've left the door open a few times since then when the engine is running and i'm de-icing the windows , just in case

thats one reason y i never do that just in case that happens glad things got sorted mate

This has happened to me before aswell!! Very embarrassing. Luckily it was at work, which is 5 mins drive from home, so I got someone to supervise my car and got a lift home to get my spare key! Problem solved.

Good job I didn't have to wait for it to run out of diesel, it had 3/4 of a tank! I would be waiting a bloody long time.

First of all THANKYOU!

I always wondered how risky leaving my keys in and closing all the doors was as I'd noted the anti theaft system locking the car when not open for a few minutes.. and also that if you use the fob to open the boot it'll re-lock the whole car when it closes..

I have ONE key.. only one! the ex-skoda dealer I bought it from ahd just moved location nad said "oh, opps.. we musy have left he spare at the other garage".. I believe em too cuz I called the last owner who swore blind she handed everything in with the car.

anyways.. I'll be more aware now!

Thanks!

when im moving cars about i either key a spare key off, or leave a window down. ive been weary of cars looking me out since a friend had a car with a clifford alarm which did the same to him :)

glad you got it sorted though! i think the same as whats been posted above. by pushing the boot lock button on the fob the central locking got confused and when you shut the boot it locked everything.

I remember an instance when one of my Fabias locked all the doors while I was getting something out of the boot. Luckily, I had the keys in my pocket so didn't have to climb in through the boot!

Must be a common thing with central locking! At my Grandmothers funeral one of the crem assistants moved the hearse around the corner whilst the service took place and when we came out the hearse had locked its-self! oops!! they no carry the spare set with them during all services.

I dunno ... it was a definitely some sort of malfunction as the breakdown guy and I tried to recreate it but to no avail.

I'm going to be even more careful from now on though.

Its not a malfunction, its by design and my octy does it to. The key to what happened is the boot unlock button.

This button is normally used when the car is locked, when you press it the boot button, the doors unlock and the hatch can be opened. When you then close the hatch all the doors lock again, so you dont need to use the lock button on the car.

When the car is unlocked, the remote boot button should not be used unless you have the key in your possesion or a door open, because when you close the boot with all doors closed the car will lock again, as its programmed to.

I looked in the manual for my Fabia Elegance (which also has the "boot unlock" button on the remote). It says that the anti-theft is activated when you close the boot, but only if the car was locked when the boot was closed. So if I unlock the car first, the manual's saying I should be OK (assuming the manual's accurate )... ?

I checked this out on my wife's 9N Polo and all that happened when I pressed the boot release button was that the hazards flashed twice, opened boot, closed boot - okay. The only thing is that the Polo has an electric boot release, ie you squeeze the "handle" but it is electrically driven (I think). This is just a comment to support the theory that some thing must be wrong with your car as I would not have thought Skoda would have planned for this to happen (I don't like even shutting the driver's door with the keys in the lock on my cars with central locking though - could be too much trouble!).

I don't think that can be correct as the engineer and I tried to recreate the 'fault' several times before he left but it didn't do it again. I think it was just a blip although I'm having a full diagnostic check done early next week.

  • 3 weeks later...

My Fabia Elegance locked me out with the engine running today. I started the engine got out to clear ice from the windows the door swung shut and immediately locked. My house key was on the fob so locked out of house and car. Tried to stop engine with rag pushed on exhaust but too much power. Had to walk 5 miles to retrieve spare key from wifes work. Found spare key button would not unlock door but placing key in lock did. I have tried this again tonight and found that if I start the engine, get out and shut the drivers door all doors lock. Is this normal it seems ridiculous to me.

Nope - hasn't happened to me! I've only had the car for 2 weeks now and it only came with one key. Needless to say I've been very careful with it! Even up to the point of rolling down the drivers window before getting stuff out the boot in case it locks, but it hasn't happened yet! Is this maybe an anti-theft thing that can be enabled/disabled on Vag-Com?

Nope, not normal IMO. Get on the phone to the dealer and see what they think.

Hmmm.

My Roomy wont lock itself if the key is in the ignition.

I'm a bit confused with this - if the car was unlocked, why didn't you just get out and simply open the boot?

Am I missing something here??
