25k miles a year - Petrol or Diesel vRS?

Featured Replies

If I had the money to burn, I'd get the petrol.

But realistically, I would get a diesel but certainly not the VRS. Get yourself a 140 PD Elegance or L&K then get it mapped. It will be quicker than the diesel VRS and with lots more goodies.

15k a year was my cut off between petrol and diesel.

At 25k a year I think it's really the derv for you. But do your maths and drive them both and make your own mind up.

Id go for the supurb and get some nice rims and get it remapped. Now thats comfort!

Thanks for all the replies. :)

Surprised there's so much in favour of the diesel - I thought there would be more people pointing towards the petrol.

£60 a month doesn't seem too much, but over 3 years thats £1800 towards paying for the car. If the diesel costs £2000 more, and the road tax is a little less a year... over 3 years the cost of running both cars is very similar. The diesel will be worth more, but I'm not sure how much by. Enough to convince me to lose the fun, refinement and excitement of the petrol to go for a diesel? Perhaps I need to drive both and work out the exact sums.

Interesting suggestion with the 140 PD - the Fabia is currently in getting some work done on the rear brakes, and I've got a 07 Octavia 2.0 140 TDI Estate as a courtsey car. Engine seems fairly decent, and cross country ability seems just as good (if not better) as my remapped Fabia on std suspension. Hard too tell after just 20 or so miles, but it's certainly more confidence inspiring and much more comfortable. It's for sale at £14k at the dealer, for an 07 with i-cant-figure-it-out miles on the clock. Essentially Petrol vRS money - but it's a nice car. Certainly feels like a much nicer place to be than the Fabia.

I'm not convinced I'll be remapping or modifying the next car in a hurry, if the Fabia is anything to go by at least. Standard = fine. Remapped = replacement clutch, and the suspension and brakes are struggling. Not sure how the Octavia fares on that side of things, but it's not something I really want to spend money on just now.

Not going for a Superb - i'm only 24 - nowhere near middle aged. Isn't a beard a prerequisite of Superb ownership too? ;)

Sounds to me like you want the petrol at the end of the day. Also petrol servicing costs will be cheaper will it not?

Or ideally, the petrol with the fuel economy of the diesel. ;)

I would only chose a Diesel today, unless you had serious amounts of cash and could afford an M5/RS4/RS6/VXR8 ect...

Don't knock the Superb if you haven't tried it. Given that you'll be doing 25K miles a year, it would be a very pleasant place to be whilst you are doing them.

I've just changed from a Superb to a vRS TDi, and whilst I love the vRS, I do miss the extra space and toys.

I've got the vRS for another two years, and I'm almost certain that the new Superb Estate will figure largely in my list of cars to get next.

In answer to your question, though, it has to be the petrol. The TDi is okay, but it's nowhere near as fun to drive. The only reason I chose the TDi was down to company car tax.

Bagpuss.

I appreciate that Makefish's TFSI is well tweaked and would probably leave my TDI behind, but not for dead;

however, for Dawson's benefit we should really be talking about TDI vs TFSI in 'Standard' tune.

I made my offer to illustrate/demonstrate to Makefish that the TDI vRS isn't the 'runt' that all you TFSI drivers think it is!! ;) :P

I agree Guy that in standard tune there's not much between the petrol and diesel VRs however I think if you compare a pretty much standard (?) VRs TDi like yours with a modified TFSI like Steves there will be a noticeable difference.

On that premise; yes Steve's TFSI would likely win, on paper; but winning the 'hearts and minds' - hmm, closer than you might think.

No offence bahnstormer, more than respect your views on the TDI

Don't think I need say any more; apart from; perhaps we should all get back on topic!

PS> Glad you enjoyed your afternoon beers. :D

My Vrs TDi went in for a fettle and I got a petrol version for the day. Nice and smooth, slightly more composed handling due to less engine weight but I missed the rush of power that you get from the diesel - and it revs far better than any diesel I've had before... What i also missed was not having to keep filling up - boy was it thirsty by comparison! If you live in the real world i.e m/ways, heavy traffic, the odd b-road blast, I'd take the diesel every time.

WOW Ferrari are gonna do a diesel!!

Petrol is seeing its final days before long!!

Wtf are you on about and what has it got to do with this thread?

I drive over 25k a year and I would not have a petrol.

Granted I have not experienced a vRS but the current car is an Accord Diesel estate which has done 118k so far in just under 4 years at 50mpg. It replaced a replaced a 1.8T Passat which did 96k over 4 years at around 34mpg.

You do notice how much more often you have to fill a petrol car up and do you want to spend all that extra time stood beside a pump!

The Accord is being replaced by an Octavia Elegance.

Good point;

I fuelled my vRS TDI last night 480 miles at 41mpg. I used to fuel my Fabia 1.4mpi around 270 miles and 35mpg!

That was a bit uncalled for Steven  :P Kindda snappy, thats unlike you :orb_laugh

My point with my last comment is that if Ferrari are bringing out a diesel then doesen`t that say something about the future of petrol`s and diesels.

Makefish you aint all that you seem you are.

Im sorry to s3akr and to everyone else that Makefish has made me reply in this way.
