Changing brake discs

Featured Replies

Hi would i need any special tools if i were to renew the brake discs on a Mk1 Octy vrs? Model is 2004

Cheers Jim

If your doing just the fronts, then no you don't need anything special. Well iirc you need a 7mm allen key to undo the calipers. Back brakes you will need a piston wind back tool to refit the pads.

As always I think this info is correct if it ain't someone will correct me

HTH

It's correct. Buy a proper wind-back tool for the rears; the effort saved is well worth the tenner or so it costs.

Whereabouts are you?

Someone may have a tool you can borrow

I thought you said you bought this car on Tuesday from a local trader with a warranty, and so far by Thursday the zenons are only half zenons (Dip only), and by Thursday the discs need changing???

Did you and he not go over the vehicle prior to purchase, and what is the warranty for???

What else is going to need replacing and cost you money, as ithis car may not seem the bargain you first thought it was ???

I don't think any Octavia comes with bi-xenons - open to correction, of course.

Didnt know if the ones he has were an aftermarket HID kit ????

I'm pretty sure that an A4 won't; legacy of not actually having a twin headlight system.

What do you need to take the actual discs off then? In terms of tools.

so far...

-7mm allen key

-piston wind back tool

-?

Do the bolts holding the discs on have allen, philips, hex or torx heads on them?? Would you recommend new bolts with new discs?

Bearing in mind it's a mk1 vRS.

I need to cost up this job for myself too, as I'm going to the nurburgring in April for some happy days!

Phillips heads on the retaining screws. I sometimes use an impact driver on them, if they're tight.

Small hammer to chip rust off the edge of the disc so the caliper will slide off (although some people prefer to split the caliper - long running argument on this! :) ) If you slide it off, you only need sockets, not allen keys, IIRC.

The screw holding the disks on has a Phillips head on it.

The xenons on it are standard factory fit option with washer jets. The car had 12 months mot on Monday and passed without any advisories. I'm asking about the discs because i happen to be considering a remap and i am fussy and may fit new discs and upgraded pads for peace of mind.

So i suggest if you can't offer constructive advice then mind your business and wind yer neck in.

Was curious as to the brakes because I have a spare set of new Black Diamond front and back discs with Ferodo DS2500 pads bought from a mate who sold his car before fitting them, that might have been of use to you, but as you say, you dont need any help from me.

So I'll keep them as spares.

i think you have shot yourself in the foot with this un friendly comment.

i have seen these discs and pads and was going to fit them to my car before i decided to sell it when the time came around to it. for the peanuts that he wants for them it i was going to take them off of him at the end of the month when i got paid, so i had them ready.

Hi Andy how are you. Sold your motor yet?

Shot myself in the foot...not really. Standard is fine for me as being able to stop faster than the bloke behind is not always a good idea.

I'm afraid i found beretta's comments sounded as if he was jumping to conclusions and and perhaps a little smug that i had 'problems' with a new car. His comment about the ds2500 pads and discs clearly made in an attempt to score points.

If i mistook him then he knows where i am.

Take care, Jim
