Fabia vRS Gearchange times...

Featured Replies

I was just wondering what you Fabia vRS owners regard as the best revolutions to change up for maximum acceleration.

Looking at the figures on these charts from AMD....

I am looking at the lowest figures on these charts because mine is standard, not remapped.

It would seem to suggest that maximum power is delivered at 3200rpm, whereas VW claim maximum power at 4000rpm.

All of the torque looks to be between 2000 and 3000rpm....

This would therefore suggest to me, that according to those charts at least, driving between 2000 and 3200 rpm would seem to give optimal acceleration.

Well, I was trying it last night, and although its possible to make good progress at those revolutions, it still *seems* quicker to rev to 4000rpm, but the chart above suggests that power falls to well under 100 bhp by the time it is anywhere near 4000rpm - and my car certainly does not feel like it loses that much power that high up the rev range.

So what do you Fabia vRS owners think?

it still *seems* quicker to rev to 4000rpm

Mine also seems to pull all the way to 4K.

If you check out http://www.seatcupra.net/feature_stealthrrday250104.htm you'll find that the PD130 ibiza's seem to be pulling their max power closer to the 4k mark than the one AMD had. Could this be because the ibiza's were more loosened up?

Paul, those AMD figures are presumably for one car. If Skoda claim 130bhp at 4000rpm and 228lb ft at 1900rpm for the PD130 engine, then those are the figures their production engines must meet. The question then is: how are those figures measured and against what standard? I can't answer that.

Yes Denis, as owned by a certain Mr R Clarke esq on this very forum.

Thanks guys...

fabkora, those plots on that page seem more like what I expected to see, certainly 3700rpm seems more likely for the power figure....

For what its worth, on my drive to work this morning, I find that I can make very brisk progress changing at the following revs...

1st into 2nd: 3200 rpm (~ 20 mph)

2nd into 3rd: 2900 rpm (~ 30 mph)

3rd into 4th: 2800 rpm (~ 45 mph)

4th into 5th: 2700 rpm (~ 60 mph)

5th into 6th: 2700 rpm (~ 75 mph)

When I drive like that it seems more satisfying and fun than revving it to 4000 rpm, but I still think revving to 4000 rpm will be quicker. Perhaps 3700 rpm is the sweet spot to change up (according to the plots on Seatcupra.net).

I usually use my "seat of the pants" feel for this but as a rule for quick acceleration I will use most of the available rev range for first and second with ASR off (but making sure i'm nowhere near the limiter, or its like hitting a wall!) and as I go up through the gears change earlier down the rev range to get the best out of gearing and torque. Ideally changing up so that he next gear drops you near to just over 2500rpm (at least on mine anyway) but it varies from car to car/remap etc.

As soon as you feel power beginning to tail off you want to be in the next gear.

I think that we could do with expert comment from our resident vRS-turned-taxi-driver on how to get the best acceleration out of a diesel.

Use a cliff?

I go up to 4k which is nr peak bhp, thats good for just under 100 in 4th.
