Hey mate your cars on fire?

Featured Replies

Holy cr*p.

Parked my car up at the gym this evening looked back at it, as I walked away and there was smoke coming from under the bonnet. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lifted the bonnet to find a small fire at the rear of the engine.

After lots of running about I managed to get it out. Burnt my hand in the process.

On lookers gave me water out of there drinks bottles to put it out.

Lots of plastic melted some trim near the window minor paint damage on the bonnet.

Could have been worse.

Has this happened before to anyone?

Sheeeit - scary!!

First time I've heard of it on Brisky!!

Could have been LOTS worse. Any idea what caused it? Is it still under warranty? Hope you haven't driven it since!

Sounds like an oil / turbo related thing to me?! Scary!

Did it look like how this fire started?

Sorry to hear about that. Glad i've got a fire extinguisher now.

No I have not touched it.

It is abandoned at the gym.

Warranty runs out in March this year.

The water fairies could not be sure of the reason.

At least the children and wife were not in it.

I have to say sorry, but i have not been on here for ages.

Sorry if the typing goes down the tubes but I am on my 5th glass of vodka and for someone who does not drink that is rather a lot

Whoa!

I'd get it recovered to the local dealer, pronto!

IIRC, Skoda Assist is included for the duration of the warranty? That should facilitate its trip to the dealer anyway....

Good luck - let us know how you get on.

Steve

I'v heard of a couple of fusebox fires starting on the Octavia. Theres one in a salvage yard at the moment but thats an elegance estate. Hope yours is nothing as serious as that. Like you say though /good job the wife and kids werent alone with it when it happened.

Darren

Any update on this? Was it turbo?

A mate of mine who bought my old RS had the turbo come loose, but no fire.

The car is recovered to JCB Skoda in Basildon.

I filled out all the paper work, all I have to do now is wait for the investigation. Now waiting for the replacement car to arrive.

JCB Skoda have been superb, everything was explained to me all the paper work was talked though and I have my own copy.

I will keep you updated.

I'd have let it burn if it was still under warranty.

It's always a bad idea to open the bonnet of a car on fire , especially if you don't have a decent extinguisher to hand

good luck with your car mate, hope it's not too serious though,is it a vrs?

Whilst I agree totaly with the sentiment that it is daft to open the bonnet, had the OP left the car to burn then surely there would have been next to no chance of him then managing a warrenty claim and been left with an insurance claim and a loss of bonus?

Did you happen to let the car sit for a longer while during it's life?

I've left my previous one in the garage for a month when I was working abroad to find chewed cables and bits of food on the engine cover when I got back. Probably mice, or any other small rodents that can crawl from underneath.

If it bursts into flames then pretty much by definition it's faulty :D

lol very true but prooving it burst into flames due to a fault would become a whole lot harder if there is nothing left to inspect.:o

A friend of mine bought a 55 plate Citroen Xsara Picasso brand new. Two months after purchase, he parked it on his drive one evening and went to bed.... 30 minuted later it burst into flames.

It was clearly a fault, a known one at that, but he still had to claim off his insurance. I think eventually Citroen took responsibility, but it was a good year or more before that happened... it's not worth it IMHO.

Will they replace parts that YOU have put water onto to put the fire out?

I can see it now

We can't replace that as it has water damage :P

The second car I ever owned was a Citroen 2CV and that set on fire driving down the motorway one cold February evening.

I was happily tootling along when I saw an orange glow coming from under the dash. I parked on the hard shoulder just after passing an AA patrol working on another car, so I ran and asked if he had a fire extinguisher.

We grabbed it and ran back to the car - by now flames were licking out from under the bonnet.

We looked at the flames, looked at the little fire extinguisher, looked at each other, and legged it!!!

After the fire brigade came and put it out, they told us its very uncommon for the car to explode, but I wasn't to know that at the time - very scary. The car was a write off, and I never got a proper answer as to what might have caused it.

To this day I still get nervous if I smell burning whilst I'm driving - even if its just going past someone burning garden waste.
