Cant get rid!!

Featured Replies

I have a 2001 on a Y skoda fabia 1.4 mpi classic with 119000 miles and 8 months mot.

After ringing round all 16 garages withing a 10 mile radius of where i live only TWO dealers were interested in taking it off me!!!

And both said the most i should hope to achieve is £1000!!!

If im being honest i am quite insulted because i though i would atleast get £1400 for it.

I thought these were desirable little cars but obviously i was just disillusioned.

Ihave just invested 250 quid in a new clutch and am gutted that this is all i will get for the car.

What am i doing wrong and do you have any tips or advise for me?

As always your replies are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Just looking at the Glass' guide for px values.....

Skoda Fabia Classic

1.4 Petrol 5-door Hatchback

5 Speed Manual Front Wheel Drive

Year: 2001 Y

Mileage: 119,000

Part-exchange Price:

Excellent condition: £1160

Average condition: £1030

Below average condition: £905

So if you were to sell private you could probably push it up to £1400. Trouble is it's a high-mileage town car and that's not a hugely popular market so the garages may be concerned about being able to sell it on.

If you go for a part ex, you might be able to get a bit off the car you're buying to top up the trade in price?

Chris

Have a look on eBay for what used parts are going for and consider selling off the bits perhaps? You may find you'll get more for it and help other people who are trying to keep their pride and joy on the road.

Once all the useful bits are gone, there are a few scrap places i've seen in the past that will actually pick up free of charge (although they won't give you anything for it!)

Just an idea.

Well i was looking at 206 d-turbo which is priced at 2795 but i would need that 1400 quid in order to be able to afford it.

The only thing is private sales are so much hassle with advertising and by that time the car i want might be sold - especially at that price.

If you can give us pictures etc and tell us how well maintained it is. Then it might be able to command a slightly higher price.

I have seen a 16v model on ebay 2000 W plate

current bid £1400 with 93k on the clock with less than a day left to run.

Dont forget a dealer will buy for £1k and mark it up say at £1400 after giiving it a god clean etc to make it presentable on their forecourt.

They are desirable little cars but at the moment with people recovering finances from Christmas its not the best time to be selling.

306 d-turbo? what reg and condition? You may find a dealer/the seller is willing to give a bit on the price if they want to sell it fast.

Priced at £2795? offer £2400 and see what they say?

It a 206 d-turbo.

2000 v

100000 miles

full service history

china blue.

the dealer offered me 1000 for the fabia but he said that he might give me less if it isnt pristine.

my car has a 3 inch scratch on the rear panel where a cyclist hit with a handle bar and has no service history since 50000 miles.

but before taking it to him i will give it a full service, valet and wheel trims.

with 69,000 not warrantied by servicing your gonna struggle take a grand and run

So its the older D turbo and not the HDI?

Halfrauds do touch up kits so you'll be able to self repair the scratch.

No service history since 50k miles? When did you get this car? and have you kept a record of when it was serviced/mieages and any work done?

My car did have a fully stamped book up to 75k, but now I just write in when it was serviced and any work I have had done on my car.

Has your car been seen by said dealer? or are these phone quotes?

Dturbo will be the Spec...

Hdi is the engine

All the 206's were common rail HDi's

Same as the old 306 engine, 90 bhp (not intercooled) pretty bombproof..

Im a pug man

The car will be a Pug 206 Hdi dturbo

I thought LX/Rapier/SE etc was the spec?

and HDI was the engine??

According to this page on parkers Might be the 2.0HDI or the 1.9D model.

the fabia belonged to my uncle who did not regularly maintain it and drove it around town for the last 69000 miles. he generally just replaced the things that broke.

If it were your decision what would you guys do???

I had to sell my Dads BILs old car (an L plate Sunny) Wasnt worth anything to be honest but sold it to a banger racer.

I'd prob patch it up and see what I could sell it for and see what the p/x value was.

Or I'd prob wait to see if there was a free motors listing day on Ebay and seeing what people bid and stuff.

No-one wants to devalue their car but if it hasn't got anything to suggest it was cared for then the price will go down or it just won't sell.

Does a grand part ex sound fair to you then, everything considered then?

Or if you were in my shoes would you go for the d-turbo or just keep the skoda and run it into the ground??

TBH I recon a £1000 is about right though the time of year and impending financial insecurities don't help.

I was looking at trading mine in last spring and was offered £1500 by a local Skoda dealer. OK, mines done a few more miles (prob 138k back then) but it is a 1.9TDI PD100, Elegance with FSSH upto 130k miles and in surprisingly clean nic. I too was dissapointed with the offer especially given that I was concidering spending an additional £3-4k on a newer model. Unfortunatly, although the Fabia is basically the same car as the VW Polo, depreciation hits the older/higher mileage/low spec cars much, much harder.

I have since decided to keep the car, maintain it myself where possible and just run it till it breaks big time or I get bored.

It depends what you want.

Have you driven the 206 and do you like it?

Do you like the Fabia?

If you don't like the car then you're prob best off selling it.

having worked in the trade the "public guides" are ott price wise your car is worth 750. the other 250 the dealer is offering is what he is knocking off the d-turbo.

personally IMHO if you are happy with the Dturbo rip his arm off. If not then sell private. But dont expect it to be hassle free.

The reasons you want a small diesel are the same reasons everyone else doesnt want a small petrol.......

im not really keen on the fabia tbh alot of my mates arent keen either and id much rather have the 206.

the only thing that is stopping me is the reliabillity niggles with the peugeot but at the end of the day im going to have it even worse with the fabia if you consider it logically.

how much more life do you reckon the fabia will have in it??

I had a pug 206 HDI from brandnew

If you enjoy a car made of tinfoil

with wipers that are set for left hand drive ie you get a half circle arc on your drivers side

Go for the pug

If you want something sturdy that will last then keep the Fabia and run it into the ground though I doubt that will happen with good maintenance and care

Well i have an up date.

As it turns out i may no longer even be getting the fabia due to there being 8 months fianance remaining = £1400.

With the car beloning to my uncle before me he now has to make the decision on whether to pay another 1400 quid on a car thats barely worth a grand on a good day, or hand it back to the finance company.

To say im gutted would be an understatment.

I'd let him hand it back to be honest if he doesn't want it.

You've already said you and your mates like the 206.

Can you afford to buy and insure it?

I'm amazed a Y reg petrol Skoda with intergalactic mileage is worth anything other than scrap value! Got off lightly there I think.

  • Author

No.

I needed at least 1200 from the fabia to insure the 206 and then i would use the money iv been saving for my car for the 206.

but now i could only really afford a car worth about £1200, if i wanted to insure it aswell, if im lucky
