Not associated in anyway with the seller, but I just spotted this W8 light painted to match the interior of the golf anniversary which I think would be a perfect match for a Mk2 vRS

W8 Light In Matt Black For VW Anniversary + Wiring Loom on eBay, also Lighting Customisation, Lights Lighting Accessories, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 01-Feb-08 14:12:10 GMT)

As I say, nothing to do with me, but thought someone may be interested in it

Do you think it's straight fit?

As it was for Golf4 I don't think so...

Octy MK2 is based on Golf5 parts.

Anyway, I would love one of those if it was straight fit (fisicaly, I know you need to run one more wire for led's).

got one in mine in grey and it's a tight fit, but goes in ok and has the recess for the oem bt mic

Bargain. I paid £45.00 for my one.

It's a straight swop for the original + a bit of fiddling with the conector/wiring.

Fitting was easy, well Stu made it look easy:rofl:

Pardon me for being ignorant, but what is the difference between this and the OEM one in an Octy?

Can't you simply remove the clear light lens, spray it and put it back to create the same effect?

The W8 has (Cat Vision) red LED lights built in. Gives off a soft red glow when the headlights are turned on. Just another gadget really but it is useful for finding your ciggys without turning on the interior lights:rofl:

Oh yeah..... you also feel like you are piloting a submarine when driving at night, good for making you feel seven years old again.

Chris has hit the nail on the head :)

Just a gadget, but I do a lot of night driving and it is useful for finding the chewing gum (don't smoke) at night and the "hunt for red october" effect :)

If the buttons still illuminate after being painted, surely they will be red?

The Superb unit is available in black I think.

Not sure about the superb unit, I have one in mine and while the switches are illuminated in red, it's not really an issue as the light is so far away from any of the other skoda green illumination

This is for an golf, but the guide should be almost identical for the octy.

W8 Inner Light

Anyone know if you can turn the reds off if needed? I don't like the idea of interior lighting I can't kill when needed.

I do have a Suberb unit. It has GREEN glow for buttons and red for lighting.

Dont know if you can get suberb one in black, but you can get it PERFECT match for

grey and beige of Octavia. VW units are not the same color. Beige looks like its been

on a car thats driver has been smoking for years... ;)

Only black model is that gti one, and it seems to be quite rare.

Edit:

You cant switch it off from the unit.

I put mine with the grey/blue cable from light switch, so it only turns on when i have my lights on.

(I have the tunnel lights, so it only lights up when its dark.)

Odd - I tried to fit a W8 light in my L&K and it wouldn't fit because of the sunglasses holder, I had to mod the plastic socket so it wouldn't foul the holder mechanism.

Oh, and I quite like the red button illumination as it matches the LED downlighters.

Mine went in fine, with a bit of bfi to fit it, the sunglasses holder drops down fine as well. Does your's have the sunroof switch?

No sunroof switch, I fitted the W8 light and the sunglasses holder just wouldn't shut because of the plastic plug for the wiring.

Fascinating (in a Mr Spock like eyebrow raising stylee) :) Maybe a bit of variable build quality at work?

Who knows :really:

My neighbours will vouch for the ill fitting part thanks to the swearing coming from a certain black Skoda in the road

Chris didn't have the sunglass holder and it was pretty much straight in. A little bit of wiring to the head light switch and job done.

After modding the fitting it went in perfectly, I had to mod it so the connector was facing back over the top of the W8 unit towards the front of the car with some added insulation to prevent shorting.

Something like this:

And if anyone is interested in what this W8 malarky is all about, this is what it's like when fitted:

Thanks for all the explanations; I seemed to spark quite a bit of 'chat' about this; but ..

IMHO, sorry, I don't like the red lighting - its not Skoda (which is & should be green). Don't think I'll be doing this mod.

I don't think you'll find ambient lighting in Green, it's Red for a reason and not because it's VW.

I've made my own version of this....

I first encountered this in a BMW several years ago and thought it was quite cool....then my DMF regressed to kit form and I had to use a Vauxhall Shedra for a week.

It had these lights and I liked them, alot.

so being a sad so & so I went to maplin and bought:

2 x green LED

1 x battery holder for 2 x AAA

1 x toggle switch.

I then chatted up my colleague who eats Altoids like they're going out of fashion.

Into the Altoid box I drilled with a 5mm drill bit - 2 holes on the 'bottom' for the LEDS and 1 hole on the side for the switch.

|------------------------------------|

|------------------------------------|

---switch#-BATTERY HOLDER--|

|------------------------------------|

|LED 1 LED 2--------------------|

|-------||------||-------------------|

soldered it all together the way I wanted...

sticky fixered and taped all my bits in

Finally I built a 'snoot' and diffuser to soften and direct the light.

I then used self-adhesive velcro to attach this construction to my rear-view mirror.

Okay - it's not attached to the light switch and I need to remember to turn it off/on, but it cost ~5 GBP and I've got rechargable AAA's lying about in need of a good use....which will last for hours running 2 little LED's.

The only mod to this design I may implement is a 'dimmer' switch instead of a toggle switch (if I could be bothered!)

They use red lighting because it doesn't damage your night vision.

It's all down to your rod cells not being particularly sensitive to red light.

I did this mod on my old Fabia VRS, my Dad's done it on his Touran and my last Golf had it as standard.... I love it such a nice little feature and something I will be doing on my Octavia for sure this year

Edit: My Estate seem's to have the potential for 2 units, can any one confirm if a W8 unit could replace the rear lighting unit?

The front and back units are the same shape so there is no obvious reason why not bar roof clearance, I've considered it in the past but not looked into it as yet.

The only potentially awkward part is running the extra wire to the second W8 but that's it.

Yup, that's the same conclusion I came to......... am I right in thinking that certain Audi's have "W8" unit style lighting in the back as standard? If so is there a specific rear unit out there that could be used
