AMD Rolling Road results thread

Featured Replies

Rolling roads are useful to show whether a mod is doing something or not......

but the same road has to be used before and after... in the same conditions i.e. temp / pressure.... as for comparing different tuners they dont really prove very much but then what does?

track is much more about handling / setup than power, fast road is more about how much balls / disregard for the law you have so how do we find out?

Not quite true Simon.

I had a chip on mine. Twas cheap and gave a big power figure. Unfortunately it was done by using the overboost facility. Pulled like a train from 2000 rpm to 3499rpm, using about 25PSI, at 3500 it dropped (instantly) to 15PSI. You'd damn near go through the windscreen with the transition. Not at all driveable.

only thing you can do is run the car on a few RR's and take some sort of an average.

i.e. my late R19 16v always ran 130-140bhp and made good torque and power curves, the car had covered alot of miles for what it was (around 150K) so when it ran 161bhp at a RR that was claimed to have been calibrated the week before something had to have changed, there is no way a new stainless exhasut and straight through cat pipe would make 21bhp over the last setup. At this RR i think it was down to the wheel size people were running (17's on the R19) and i think they entered the wrong size whcih then threw the rollers out. Either that or the old girl made more power as the mileage went up.

i am impressed with the figures from the standard octy rs' though, at least i can have an idea to what mine is running.

And now you know the reason I don't do RR days.

Yes my car is mapped. I like the way it drives. It is putting out slightly more than standard. Is it 150? 200? 250? Who knows? Who really cares. All I know is' date=' it is quicker than it was and I'm happy with the amount extra I've got (be it 5, 10, 15, 20, 50, 100...bhp more than as standard) for the money I've paid.

Simple innit? :D[/quote']

Exactly and more power doesn't mean faster in all situations.

For example a few friends went to the Nurburgring last year. They met up with a guy that lives pratically next door to it. Then all had tweaked cars and he had a bog standard Astra Estate 1.7 TD which was a loan car. Now cause he new the ring like the back of his hand he was out handling cars that had 250+bhp. It's not all about power, it's about how you apply it to everyday driving conditions.

Ah, but the Ring is different. :D

Yes mine was the only AmD Octavia vRS to go on the RR. It's all been said, it comes down to driveability; you can have as much power as you like but if it renders the car as undriveable, then what's the point?

For the record. My car was treated to a full Miltek exhaust, new DV and a re-map. It's running a standard air box and filter and there are no other modifications, in the engine department that is. This work was done in August 2002 at 2410 miles. The car has now covered 41000 miles, with no problems.

The RR results stand to confirm what I already knew. It is performing better now than when it was first done. If I can manage to attach the RR results then I think you'll see why. You will note that the bhp readout is virtually a straight line and the torque figure is fairly flat, both these curves were slightly spikier immediately after the re-map. They now confirm to me just how driveable the car is, no spikes, no flat spots, no sudden surges of power, just the right amount of useable power where you want it and when you want it.

For the record, the original readout after the work at 2410 miles gave 214.2 bhp @ 5772 rpm and 232.9 lbft of torque @ 3419 rpm.

The readings from the weekend now show 216 bhp @ 5694 rpm and 226.2 lbft of torque @ 4673 rpm. The readout also shows that most of the torque is available at around 2400 rpm re-inforcing the car's driveability. I'm not sure why the torque figure is down on the previous reading but would assume it's down to heat, it was extremely hot on the RR.

I hope this information helps. I have plans to fit a few other goodies including a FMIC in the very near future ie this week. I'll keep you posted if anyone is interested.

Andrew

Can't upload the graphs for some reason and this info is not much use without them, I will try again or perhaps beg Ross at AmD to help!!

Jabba this Jabba that, Revo this Revo that, you lot should get out more and see what is really happening out there before you spend your hard earned on the tuner of everyone elses choice but not yours. Try out some differant chips and find one that suits you and your style of driving.

Problem is Des, not everyone can afford to try different chips, so whatever they buy has to be right first time.

Regardless of numbers, i'm over the moon with how mine drives.

Nuff said :)

Quite right Geoff. What I should have said is come along to one or two meets and try out the different chips. Unfortunately when I was modifying this avenue was not open to me, just seems a shame to waste it thats all.

Good point Sir :)

By the way i have a Pic of that RS6 wheel you took a shine to, i might post it just to tempt you :P

You really hate me don't you. ;)

OZ! :D

Cheaper than satnav ;)

Oh no Des, i just like stretching your will-power to its limit..

Pic will follow when you least expect it :D

Shut ya face you!

So WHY does Andrews RS show more on the rollers than Dave's with just the 'zorst,DV and remap? Is the CAI , LAN etc just a load of shiny ****?

At Brunters i over took {several times} at least 3 Jabbad RS's one which i know has 228bhp , why could'nt he overtake my standard one on the straights? If that's all a remap can do then sorry but it's not enough.{Please dont think im trying to p*ss anyone off if i cant be honest then what's the point}

I went out in Manny's and was impressed with the mid-range but i cant really compare it with mine because i didnt drive it.

Des did you get my PM cos you aint answered it  .

Dave thanks for the invite but im working, maybe next time.

Steve

Steve, there's 1001 reasons why those cars at Brunters *might* have been down on power or running slow. Several people passed me when my front wheels came loose for instance

At the same time there were several chipped RS's you didnt get near to. 2 sides to every story etc.

Driver skill (and lack of it) comes into play on track. I kept on the tail of a Noble at Croft last month but was passed by a 205 GTi.

Steve[/quote']After turning up when everyone had gone the chaps from AMD were tiying up and i had a quick chat.................

I was told by one of the guys at AMD that the Golf is the only car to benifit from the TIP as it has a squeezed pipe as a restriction he said it makes little or no diff; to the other 1.8t`s.......(young chap with glasses)

 Phil

Fair points Geoff and Steve...........

Any chance one off you will 'Ahem' TRUST me with a couple of laps as a comparison :D Thought not

Steve

Steve, let me loose in yours and you might have a deal sometime.

I can't remember what a standard one feels like :D

I suggest you PM Jimmy. He went from a 230ish BHP Octy to a 180 Bhp RS estate...and had it remapped within 2 weeks of changing. He said there was no comparison between the 2 cars ;)

What to do? Remap and zorst later in the year or finish cab payments in 12 months and go the whole hog,

Steve

p.s Geoff your more than welcome to try it

Steve,

Don't put so much emphasis on the figures, the same RR could well produce different figures from 1 hour to the next. Any test equipment of any kind has variation in the results it gives whether it was calibrated last week or last year.

I'd be the first to complain if i wasn't happy with my car, but i'm more than happy with how it drives on the road and that's what counts ;)

:agree: At Brunters I overtook some Jabba'd Octys yet this strange yellow diesel thing overtook me! :mecry:

I do. ;)

Just turn the boost down and it feels soooooo slow in comparison.

IIRC Brunters was quite a hot day and as Bill said a standard RS will probably perform better than a remapped RS.....I think I'm correct in saying that....as the tempearture goes up it is much harder to hold boost, particular a remapped RS.

Last Summer, when the it was very hot, my RS felt particularly "lazy" and response was down........now if only you could control the boost depending on the ambient temp. ;):D

On track I tip a load of octane booster in the tank. This helps the engine to maintain a higher boost as the knock sensor is not cutting the pressure. I also turn things down a bit on the boost controller when it gets hot outside. All I need now is a boost gauge and a knock link to monitor things!
