Fraying Seats

Featured Replies

Hey up!

I have just heard from my Dealer that Skoda C/S are not wanting to replace the seat covers on my Octy, which are fraying because the warrenty is only valid for one year........... :thumbdwn:

Does anybody have any experience of this, which to me sounds like proper cr*p, as the car is 19 months old with less than 15K on the clock......... I shall be ringing C/S myself, and will threaten with bad publicity, but just wondered if anybody has any additional advice............

Cheers!

My Octavia is in the dealers right now having the seat covers replaced.

Mine is nearly 3 yrs old - with 15K on the clock , but is still under warranty.

Why has yours only got a one year warranty?

I have a furby which has 1500 miles on it, the dealer is going to replace the cover as it's only just over 2 months old.

I'm reading all these complaints on various threads ref. fraying bolsters on vrs seats.

Being in the car trim trade I'm sad to have to tell you that this is a common problem with ALL cars with what I call recaro style seats,i.e. backrests and bases with 'wings' on them. Also seats without these wings suffer, albeit at a slower wear rate.

Theses wings are subject to high wear, regardless of wheather they are cloth or leather I'm afraid.

I'm phsically lifting my large bulk away from these wings when I'm getting in and out of the car.Not particulary easy but 2000+ miles on and there is no sign of any wear on my vrs seat YET.

You will get new covers on warranty...well you should..but DON'T expect the new covers to wear any better. Sorry!

It's not you, or the quality of the material or car,it's simply the design and shape of the seat.

I'm constantly asked to replace panels on seats with this problem. Not easy on most as the manufacturers will generally speaking not release the material to the trade, but simply sell you a new cover :eek:so I try and fit material as close as possible, normally to an acceptable level! Some covers are relitavley cheap,i.e.corsa

i do have the standard 3 year warranty......... just Skoda are quoting that the seat warrany is only valid for 1 year............. sounds pants to me!

who is doing yours incidentally Steve?

Gilly

'SkodaAuto are pleased to a two year unlimited mileage against defects in material or manufacture on all ist new vehicles. In addition SkodaAuto UK provides a further warranty on new vehicles supplied by them, through their appointed dealer network which is valid until the vehicle has completed 60,000 miles or the end of the third year, whichever is the sooner. In the event of a vehicle becoming defective due to faulty manufacture or material, it must be promptly returned to an appoined Skoda Retailer where it will be repaired free of charge...............

The warranty will not apply:

To any component which has failed due to neglect, misuse.........

To any component that has failed as a result of accidental breakage, fair wear and tear..............'

NOWHERE does that warranty mention a shorter time period (eg one year) for specific problems such as seat wear.

Elmside Skoda in South London (0208-289-1846)

I've had a few things done under warranty without any problems what so ever.

Note - Don't drop me in the $h!t when you ring CS - I ain't got the car back yet!!

Thats not where the problem is, its where the white material meets the leather at the front of the seat base.

CS in Ireland said they'll give me seat covers but I'll have to pay for the fitting.

Tell SkodaIreland that you intend complaining to SkodaAuto that they are not honouring the terms of manufacturer's warranty.

Gilly - quite a few of us have had the covers changed under warranty and im sure that if you let Skoda CS know that you know this (and know the people involved) im sure they will back down. Almost every used Octy RS ive seen has had the fraying at the front of the silver meshing and Skoda do know its a problem. BTW I had both front seat covers replaced in the third year of the warranty so their comments are absolute :dung:

The problem is that my car is well outside warranty now. The car came with a one year warranty, the problem is that I bought it as a demo and I think Skoda Ireland are seeing it as only having 9 months warranty left on it when I bought it in Sept 01, as they say the car was delivered on the 21st June 01.

I e:mailed them stating,

The drivers seat cover was last replaced on the 25/7/03, this was due to the cover, which had been replaced on the 23/4/03 not sitting correctly. When the car was in on the 1/3/04 for its 30k service, I showed this to the dealer so I think its unacceptable that cover only lasted less than 8 months (approx 6000 miles), especially when you take into account it was like this for a period of time. The original cover, which had been on the car, was first shown to the garage on the 10/9/02, which is less than a year after I purchased the car.

With regards to the Passengers seat cover, the first record I have of mentioning it to the dealer was on the 24/2/03, that

I believe there is a 12 month warranty on any parts...so the replaced part should not need replacing within 12 months. Just what I've heard though...

Rob.

Well check this out for a response

Our decision and offer remains the same. For spare parts warranty cover to apply the customer must have paid towards the repair costs. As the repairs in July 2003 were carried out free of charge you do not have warranty cover on these parts.

We can not assist you with the remainder of the repair costs.

Can anyone with a good dealer relationship confirm this.

I think these boys need to go back to customer service school.

 Sets a dangerous precedent if what they're saying is true!

As a different tack, maybe you could point out to them that the steps they took to resolve your original issue weren't satisfactory, so they have still as yet to fix the problem raised during the warranty period...

Rob.

Used to work with a ford dealer and from experience ... he who shouts the loudest gets the most. Seats shouldn't fray in that time so ask them for replacement or atleast a good will gesture of atleast 80% towards the total cost of the seat repair.Hope this helps

spoke to C/S and they were more than happy to replace them for me, FOC. i complained about the dealer to them, and the lad phoned on my behalf and then rang us back to tell us he had TOLD them to do it...........

just awaiting them being delivered............. top service to Skoda

Good work, see it's Joe/Joanne public who has to tell the dealears how to do there job. It makes me mad sometimes.

I contacted Skoda-auto.cz and have been told

'However I am sorry but as I have already informed you, we are not able to interfere in the complaint's solution between you and the Skoda

dealer/importer in your country since they are individual subjects and make their independent decisions.

Nevertheless, I have once again forwarded your latest reaction to my colleague from the importer organisation and ask them

for the consideration of the whole matter one more time. On the other hand, since the car is out warranty I still believe that

the fact that Euroautos and Skoda Auto company takes over the costs for the material is a generous goodwill gesture for the customer like you whom we respect."

In a previus e:mail he did say "There is a new innovative material used in the seat cover for the Octavia RS so you should not be experiencing the same problem with your car anymore"

Skoda Ireland response after that was

"Our decision with the replacement costs of the covers is generous and we can not assist with the labour charge.

Please arrange a time with your dealer to have the covers fitted. They will be able to advise you of the costs for the labour charge."

So it looks like I'll have to pay for fitting. I'm going to find out what the warranty situation will be on the new ones, I'll probably be told that because I didn't pay for the actual cover that there will be no warranty.

I must say I'm very disappointed.

Mine were done under warranty at 28 months and 133,000 miles :D

Mine were done under warranty at 28 months and 133,000 miles :D

Its like getting blood out of a ****ing stone getting stuff done over here.

At least they seem to have the sense to see the problem and sort it out over there without too much trouble.

Coil packs - were monitoring but no issue - bullsh*t

Faultcode - sometimes you get strange faults - bullsh*t

Seat covers - normal wear & tear - again bullsh*t

When are they going to stop treating us like idiots, waken up were not stupid !

The dealer rang me up the other day, we came to an agreement that I'd pay half the labour costs. I was happy enough with that.

Anyone know what the going hourly labour rate in the Skoda garages ?

I was told that to fit the 2 seat cover bases would take 4 hours, would this be the norm ?

Also anyone know what the price is of the padding on the base of the passengers seat under the seat cover, I'm going to get this changed as with passengers getting in and out of the car its getting to the stage that the metal frame is touching off the leather, so better to get it replaced when new covers are going on.

Also as I'm paying towards the labour I'll be getting 2 years warranty on the parts.

The padding for the seat is circa

I am F-U-R-I-O-U-S

I just looked over at my front passenger seat bolster and it's frigging started to wear, really badly. It's got loads of 5mm-10mm long filaments sticking out in an area about 5cm by 5cm, and it looks truely awful.

Needless to say, I am going straight to the dealer first thing tomorrow to get this sorted ASAP. They get one chance on this I am afraid, and if the other does it too, then that's it totally. It's just NOT good enough fabric.

My Fabia vRS is 33 days old and has covered 2200 miles.

(Also see/update this thread if you have a Fabia vRS http://www.briskoda.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6419, thank you all)
