Replacement Key - Only buy a NEW UNUSED one

Featured Replies

I recently purchased a key flip from eBay complete with blank blade costing £32.

Aparently the dealer network charge CIRCA £160 - so thats £100 + saved. Great I hear you say.

I asked around before and was getting mixed reactions as to whether this would work.

I then had the blade cut at a local key cutter - at a cost of £5.95

I managed to use VAG-COM to pair the key to the locks, and it now locks/unlocks remotely - so I only have the immobiliser to crack !

Inserting the key into the ignition and turning, maxidot reports "Immobilizer Active"

To be expected as the key has not be paired yet.....

so out comes laptop and VAG-COM

I have followed the instructions on http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/Immobilizer_IV_Key_Matching

And when inserting the replacement key maxidot displays Immobilizer Adjust failure

As a result the replacement key does not get programmed.

I have been in contact with Sebastian and we have been through this and decided that the key is pretty useless

Checking controller 25 - Immobilizer

measuring blocks 08

Group 001, 002 with the key supplied with the car you will see that Engine Start Permitted says YES

but insert the key purchased from eBay shows NO

also Key Status (Transponder Lock) also = YES, which means the key has already been locked....

So to sum up, the Octavia II is indeed setup not to except used keys.

I am shocked - this not only means I need to source a NEW UNUSED key, but the one I have can not be reprogrammed??? So it may as well go in the land fil ?

I will contact the dealer on Monday and pose the question, but suspect that I will have to pay the £160

That's annoying - are you able to specifically lock a key then? I would imagine that it should be recodable, but I have no idea.

Interestingly, on the Mondeo you can DIY recode any keys provided that you have 2 active working keys which makes the whole process much simpler and cheaper :D

The person who I purchased the key from had lots of others sold, and all left positive feedback.

Perhaps they all have older Skoda's, but as I thought the Octavia II was the only one with a flip key, thought nothing of it.

I know other people with VW's have managed it - being passat's etc with flip keys.

It could be the new generation of Emobiliser IV >

Maybe someone on here will know a souce for cheaper keys ?

I think plenty of other Skoda's have flip keys, the Fabia vRS's for one, I think the upper end of the range of the mk1 Octys too?

I'm afraid I can't help with the problem though. :(

I had the same problem with an "allegedley" Brand New blank key from eBay. It was not able to be coded by VAG-COM as it appeared that it had been coded before.

Nearly ended up stranded in Newbury with no working keys eh Stu!!:D

Yes we did Barrie didn't we :P

Pretty sure I've posted this before but here goes again -

4th generation immobiliser (Octavia II)

4th generation immobiliser comes with model range Octavia II and due to its new features, improves the protection against theft.

It is necessary to stress that the system itself provides the electronic protection for the engine control unit and that is why it is important to pay attention especially when accessing the engine control unit.

Differences between 3rd and 4th generation of immobilisers:

Using the brand code prevents the use of different parts among the VW Group

Each kind of engine control unit has its own code preventing so-called chipping / tuning. (255 potential categories)

Coded data exchange between immobiliser and engine control unit even while learning adaptation is applied.

Waiting period of 5 min for learning of new components being installed into the system

Different crypto code algorithm for key and for engine control unit

Keys

As in previous generations, keys that contain a transponder have a fixed code and a SKC (Secret Key Code - specific according to the vehicle) which is stored in the immobiliser. In contrast to 3rd generation keys, they also contain a so-called MK code (Marken Kode, code of the vehicle make), which means that a key for Skoda cannot be used in VW etc.

Key replacement

Preconditions of the key replacement:

The immobiliser and the engine control unit are adapted to each other (i.e. they have identical VIN and SKZ numbers),

Immobiliser has status 3 or 6 (measured values block No. 2 position 4)

You can adapt keys that are new or were already adapted to the immobiliser.

Sure hope my 2nd key can be coded.... :( Still need to get it cut but I feel I'm pushing my luck having had 1 key for over 2 years.

What still bugs me is the fact that the key transponder appears to be write once and unlike CD's it can't be used as a coaster.

In a world that has gone mad for everything green - hows this helping.

Perhaps a new thread - what to do with your useless spare key ?

In response to your message I have Pm'd you a possible solution.

New cars are only 'green' for marketing reasons.

Do you have the old faulty key as well as the new key from e-bay?

If so I know somebody who does microscope soldering on a daily basis and could probably change the chips on the circuit board for you.

Hi, My remote key stopped working (just out of warranty....). Cost about £80 for dealer to supply and program new part. They just supplied the electrical bit and fitted that to the original key.

I have just purchased a 55 plate Superb with only one key and i want a spare what is the most cost effective solution??

I went through the rigmarole getting an extra remote for my VW. The flip key actually has 3 separate parts with 3 quite different functions:

Key blade: rotates a lock cylinder to lock/unlock doors and operate ignition switch. Blanks easily available, can be cut by good locksmiths (if you have the black plastic tab that came with the keys with a new car that has the key-cutting code).

Immobiliser chip (aka RFID transponder): after being programmed to the particular vehicle's immobiliser this allows the engine to run after being started (does seem to be model specific and/or locked once used in later model VAG systems). In mine this was a small glass capsule (similar in size and shape to a large grain of rice), it wasn't soldered or connected to anything in the key, just glued in place near the key blade. Needs to be programmed by dealer (AFAIK Vag-Com can't do late model ones).

Remote: Locks/unlocks door locks (can be matched to car by owner if they have a working key/remote, but only if the remote is the correct part number).

I eventually did find one source for Immobiliser chips that worked on my 2007 VW Transporter (after much web searching, many EMs and several programming attempts by the dealer), but it was a LOT of hassle, and when I tried to buy some more they couldn't supply any more. The other two bits (key blade and remote) were quite easy to get (heaps on ebay usually)

If you have a key that did work then the Immobiliser chip should be OK and won't even need to be progammed by the dealer, just put it in the new key.

Hope that helps.

could it be possible to do it??? i have changed the alarm to a thatcham cat.1 and theres no worries about using the fob that came with the alarm system (of course if its possible to have that reprog'd aswell then thats a bonus) what does everyone thnk (b4 i take the plunge and buy one) could i use it? compatible wih that immobiliser? im a newbie to such things and thought id ask the experts :) thnx for any help you could give me.

I've just bought a spare key from ebay for my 03 Passat and the code is different to what it was advertised as and funnily enough the seller isn't replying to my communications.

Anyway does anyone know that if my cars current key is a HLO 1JO 959 753 AH (which later was replaced with DA and is the 3 button fob) can the key supplied to me off ebay which is a HLO 1KO 959 753 G be made to work which looks identical but a different code?

Is it a case of getting the right transponder from somewhere like Hickleys Hickleys :: Welcome to Hickleys - HomePage ???

I can get the key reprogrammed and blank key cut at a local dealership for £35 but need it to be the right key first.

Renault keys are like this, the newer ones anyway, they are all locked to the VIN number of the car and wont programme to any other vehicle

On the question of keys and things, I had a 2002 Fabia that had an emergency code printed in the key fob. If your transponder was damaged you could insert that code using the trip switch and tha car would start. I had a plain key cut (VW Sharan) and kept it in my wallet. Never needed it but used it a few times if we were out with the kids and they wanted to go back to the car.

Is that facility still available? eg. In my 06 Octy?
