Problem Connecting to t'internet ??

Featured Replies

Have an ethernet wired PC upstairs(Vista Ultimate) and a wireless laptop(Vista Home Premium).

Was connected through an orange livebox but it was temperamental at best so I changed to a BT Voyager 2500v which has been working flawlessly for the last month.

Switched the PC on yesterday and it was showing problems with the network connection

I go into the network centre, and for a while it shows an 'unidentified network' with limited connectivity and if I try to repair the connection it then shows that I have multiple networks, with one being 'Unidentified network' and the other being 'network 2' but neither have any more than local access.

The laptop still works fine via the wireless connection. I have tried a system restore but that made no odds, the only thing I can think of is that I installed Photoshop CS3 the night before the connection went tits up but I cant imagine thats got much to do with it??

I did an Ipconfig from my desktop and got the following,

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]

Any ideas, Im confused but that doesnt take much :D

Well, the ethernet on your PC seems to be connected, because its got a IP address lease from DHCP..

One thing that doesnt look right is it has 0.0.0.0 as a preferred gateway as well as the router address.

can you ping other machines?

ie:

ping 192.168.1.1

which should reply as its your router

and 192.168.1.3 is currently your laptop.

Agree with Col - default gateway should be 192.168.1.1 and if it's picking 0.0.0.0 then nothing will be able to get out of the box. If you have 2 networks shown, then it may be worth deleting both and letting it create a new one :D

I Pinged 192.168.2.2 and 4 hops <1ms

Ping Statistics

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0

Then Pinged the laptop with the same results, only a slightly longer time 99ms.

Can you ping Google from each machine (or do a traceroute)?

100% packet loss and timed out for that, just going to try deleting the connection.

(works on the laptop)

Sounds like none of the packets are making it out of the LAN then (if you have the default gateway as 0.0.0.0 then it just uses "broadcast" to send packets which means they'll only get as far as all machines on the LAN). When you have the new connection, make sure the default Gateway is 192.168.1.1 and all should be well.

Hmm, wont let me delete the network only disable, diagnose etc etc.

Should i put in the default gateway through the TCP/ip bit on the existing network.

Strangley it says multiple networks but whe you go into network connections its only actually showing the 1, my lan connection.

Yeah try changing it on the existing connection and see if it fixes it. The other settings looks fine.

Pretty confused now  Put in the manual settings and couldnt work out what to put my IP addy as in TCP/IP settings, so set it back to automatically obtain while I posted on here on the laptop.

My daughter crawled in and played her favorite game (Push the buttons on dad's PC) and the computer restarted  and its started working again :o

the ipconfig looks like this now

I'm scared to turn it off now :D, thanks for the help.

For manual settings you'd want to enter these:

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2(Preferred)

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

although the value of the IPv4 address doesn't matter too much so long as it's a 192.168.1.x address it'll be fine.

Glad it's all working now - you'll notice your ipconfig output no longer has 0.0.0.0 has the preferred gateway so it knows that it needs to route through 192.168.1.1
