Headphone Recommendations

Featured Replies

Right, I managed to snap my Panasonics last night.

So I need a new set for home use.

Essential Requirements:

LONG cable with standard 3.5m jack plug

Closed Back

Must have good sound reproduction - bass, but not muddy.

I've been toying with a set of sennheisers for around £50, which is my limit really.

Alternative suggestions?

Red 5 Audio RVH90.

Great headphones, fairly cheap. I use them when SWMBO complains about the noise when I'm recording guitar.

I've got some Sennheisers similar to those Aspman linked to - they're the best headphones I've had, really good bass and pretty much noise canceling (that's a plus and a minus - bad if anyone ever tries to talk to you!)

All good suggestions so far.

Just one thing - I don't want in-ear types. I've got those (Shure SE210)already for use with the old ipod. But for at-home use, I'd rather have something a bit more substantial and less likely to get lost in the bed.

Not sure noise cancelling is really a requirement if I get a closed back set like I broke last night. Seals off most of the background noise etc at home, so I don't hear even why I'm being spoken too.

Red5 Audio Ltd Accessories

There's the red 5 ones.

£25 and worth every penny. The only downside is they've got a springy lead (@1.5m) rather than a straight one.

I guarantee you will not be disappointed with these. (Their microphones are fantastic as well - I use an RV6 for all of my recording).

If its any help, my brothers mate was car audio installer, really into all things audio

and always recommended sennheiser without hesitation.

I have got a Sennheiser pair of headphones, cost me just over £70 at the time. They are the HD-515 over ear ones, they can now be had cheaper.

What put me off the Red 5 ones is the short springy lead. Given I usually sit 9-10 feet from the source........

Otherwise a good deal.

Opted for some Sennheiser HD 215's. I've got half a dozen assorted Sennheiser mic's, and they've seen serious action and still look/perform as new. But wasn't sure of the headphones - recommendations here just tipped me over the edge.

Under budget too. Just await delivery.

Cheers Guys.

Another vote for Sennheiser, I've had a pair for DJing for years - bulletproof (so to speak)

Check out the reviews for Goldring DR100 (google them) headphones! They are the business and not too expensive.

If you can get a pair cheap enough on ebay or somewhere then go for Grado SR125's. Also the business and a cool retro look to them too!

Seriously consider these 2 sets over some of the lesser quality "High Street" names! You won't be dissapointed with either of these pairs!

I was toying the the Grado SR80's.

But the price, for what they'll be doing 90% of the time........

I had to take a deep breath buying the Shure 210's that I use out and about for the ipod. Another set at that price point just couldn't be justified - not for TV viewing and PS3..........

I also wanted to stay closed back - the Grado's are open......

The goldrings are open too! Why do you want to go closed back out of interest??

well, less prone to being affected by background noise, better isolation and less noise leakage.

generally held beliefs of this sound recording monkey (hobby level)

I use headphones loads for editing recordings - you can't really go wrong with Sennheiser, their models are all good honest value at their price point. I've tried the Goldrings and they're decent too, as are the Grado models - but some people find the Grado design hellish uncomfortable in the long run (the GS1000 model is exceptionally comfortable but costs, ahem, £1000). Audio Technica has some nice new models in its line-up, and Beyerdynamic is another make I've always enjoyed.

I've been looking around & these seem to be just right for me. £32.92 & free delivery from Amazon.

Have you got yours yet? Are they any good? Is the cord 3m coiled or when stretched out?

It's coiled, but stretches for the full 3m. Bit of a PITA........

Sound is clear, fairly well balanced affair.

Save yourself another fiver and buy them from Play....£28 delivered.......

Thanks for that; one pair of HD 215's on their way to me.
