Alternatives to vRS?

Featured Replies

I've owned my Octy vRS estate for a couple of months now, and have squirrelled a wee bit of money aside for mods to it.

I've been working out that by the time I do the timing belt/pump (due now), exhaust, CAI, DV, ARB, remap, etc, I'll be looking at the best part of £1,800.

So, I've been thinking that if I sell my car, get about £4,800 for it, add the £2k I have put aside, what would my options be regarding a different car that has the same subtlety, discreetness, rarity, performance and economy as the vRS - and an estate?

I was thinking of a Volvo T5 estate before I was offered the vRS, but finding one with sensible mileage is mighty difficult.

I like the vRS because it is different and great to drive......well, maybe I'm just being cautious about spending so much money on mods that will not add a penny to the value of the car......some would say just being a typical Scot :P

Thanks for any views you may have.

Audi RS2? ;)

Choices are limited in estate form for that sorta dosh and something that will return sensible mpg..

t5 looking at 25-30mpg? maybe a d5 can pick those up pretty cheap, SE has 200bhp.

Subaru Impreza comes in estate form.

Keep the original parts and if/when you come to sell the car swap them back over and sell them on again ;)

OR look for second hand parts ;)

CIA/DV/Exhaust/Arb should come up for sale from time to time!

Just before buying the Octi vRS I did al lot of research for this

and looking at all aspects the V40 T4 came up.

But worse economy, space and looks.

The Octi vRS isn`t standard compared most of the other cars. (I never have to search on a parking lot)

If you build in LPG a Omega 3.0v6 (I owned a 2.5v5) is huge to have,

but with gas there are far more options than. (I looked at a Senator 3.0 24v, cops in your country used to drive them)

Plus better sounds with V6 engines, ah whatever.

On average they`re slow compared to the Octi vRS.

Look at it this way: from your current car you know what you`ve got (technical state),

when buying some other ride you have to wait for that... (could be a piece of junk)

Keep in mind a lot of people sell their car because it is becomming expensive.

Switching would be a gamble than...

I would keep the car and spend a few quids on modding.

Greets, Snoetje

Nothing as "perky" as an octy estate for similar money, I've got an estate and love the look on ppls faces when you shoot off from lights! not many alternatives that will put a smile on your face as an octy. Plus as above estate vRS are faily rare. I havn't seen another 1 other than mine yet. All in octy is probably the best option fuel economy, reliablity, power, practicality etc.

In my opinion keep it and splash on the mods.

I am another keep it, hopefully the mods listed and cambelt might not be as much as £1800

Another vote for keeping it.

Also with the mods you intent to do, I think you would find it hard to find something to match it for the money.

keep it and forget the exhaust, CAI, DV as they will make sweet FA difference in my opinion. just do remap and be done with it :)

only do the DV if yours goes tits up mate, cambelt and remap should be possible for about £800 if you shop around so thats 1k you can put towards my car going back on the road :D

An audi 2.0 deisel is prolly your best bet i would say, however ull need to do a decent search as most have high milage

Than LPG; cheaper, cleaner, faster.

And no cursing here, diesel pff!

Hi

Keep the Octy worst mistake i ever made getting rid of my vrs in 2002, just bought another mk1 although with a few mods 300bhp+:D

No no... you got that post all wrong.

What you SHOULD have said is "I hear Honda Accords 2.2 icdti's are an excellent alternative... and it just so happens.... "

:D

Thanks to all.

I have been thinking about what else would offer similar power and an Impreza wagon would with easy modding potential, but no thanks - every man and his dog has/had one and that's why I like the vRS, especially as JohnRS says, they are fairly rare.

If only Honda did a fast estate within my budget.......;)

Thanks for the offer of relieving me of a grand Bengie - very decent of you :D - but I think I will keep ahold of my hard earned pennies.

Been in contact with Jim @ Star, who says that a remap will take the car to roughly 205bhp, and he would recommend a DV, panel filter, exhaust and FMIC to achieve the turbo's limit of 225bhp.

What I think I'll do is the exhaust/CAI/TT arch mod first, and then get him to do the belt, map and DV at the same time - should be a little less being done at the same time rather in dribs and drabs.

Thanks again

Steve

Show me an RS2 for around 8k and i'd buy it myself ! ;)

Scathel, totally agree with Bengie. I had a mk1 Octy vRS Estate, and as long as I used 99 Octane fuel, my custom remap with boost control from Jabba got 240bhp, with NO other mods whatsoever...

Hmm...you sure ?

I can see this turning into another "Whose rolling road is accurate" thread.......

All I have to go on is what I have been told by Jim, and from others I have spoken to who have used both Star and Jabba, and they all agree that they would rather use the figures from Star than Jabba.

With Jabba being kinda far away from me, I'll never have the chance to compare the two with the same set up, so can't possibly comment any further.......

Dont want to turn it into one of those threads either..

Soo.. on topic.

Keep the Octy for now, you'll be hard pushed to find something similar for the money. :)

shame you're not local to Hull.

Could have all that done for under £1700 I reckon.

Aye, I'll keep the car and do the work to it Johnny. Mebbe I could go out in yours as you live near to me to see how it'll turn out?

I'm often in South Yorkshire, angry dog, but sadly not in the car!

Nobody has mentioned a BMW estate yet? Is this because of the general treatment one gets off other road users when driving one? I had a 325i about 10 years ago, and couldn't believe how people's attitudes towards me changed depending on what I drove.

Or will I now be banned for mentioning those three letters :D

Yes don't know what the B and the M stand for but we all no what the W stands for.

B = Beware

M = Mobile

W = ??????

BM what?????? Wash your mouth out with SOAP lol

Well, if we're using foul language, a BMW 530d Touring might be found for that sort of money if you're lucky. Budget an extra £50 to get the indicators fitted correctly - all the ones I've seen on the road seen to have busted bulbs or something...

Going out on a limb, you might just be able to find something more exotic from the Alpina range. They did tuned diesel and petrol models in Touring form, but finding RHD might be tough. £7k won't get anything too new, admittedly.

Ford Focus ST170 estate is probably too much of a drop in power compared to the vRS, but the chassis is good by all accounts, and they're not common.

Subaru Legacy might be worth a look, since it's probably more practical than the Impreza wagon. The Forester can also be found with some nice engines (S-Turbo), particularly Jap imports.

Or buy lots of lottery tickets and hope that one generates enough cash for the forthcoming VW R36 estate. Mmmmmm.

Si

Or will I now be banned for mentioning those three letters :D

No, but Lady E may want to come round for a MEAL :eek::eek:
