Cracked windscreen!

Featured Replies

Went out to my car a minute ago to find a crack in the windscreen.

Large, with a 90degree bend right through the passengers eyeline.

No problem, I thought. I'll get it done on the insurance, I'll just pay my £75 excess.

The snag is that they can't come to do it until wednesday!!!

I've got to drive round with this embarrassing crack that makes it look as if I don't care about my car!!

And where do I stand if I get pulled over before Wednesday?

What a farce!

Kick up stink mate, ask the insurance company if you can get it done locally and send

off the receipt & claim expenses back as its a hazard and needs sorting, if its the sort

of crack that would warrant an MOT failure (which it sounds like it is) it should be classed

as hazardous, tell them you need a courtecy car (if policy includes this) if you have to

wait till wednesday as your not happy driving it. Sure 'Tallack windscreens' in Penryn

could do it sooner, you could go over road and have coffee with Ron and 'welshy' while

you wait!

IIRC, it'll only fail the MOT if it's in the driver's eyeline and affecting your view. Most insurers have approved glass/windscreen companies - just ring all of the local branches and see if any can sort you out sooner. If it's an approved company, they sort out the bill direct with your insurance company (so remember to take all your docs with you)....

Yeah, scooby's right about drivers view, assumed from dj's original post it went right

across then down 90 degrees on passenger side, hope it gets sorted rapid though:thumbup:

I don't think you do remember correctly, mate, I'm pretty sure it's anywhere in the area swept out by the windscreen wipers and bigger than 10mm. I know 'cos my car's had a 9mm chip out of the windscreen since I bought it and my mate who does my MOTs has been teasing me about it annually.

You are allowed a chip/crack up to 10mm in the swept wiper area 190mm either side of the steering wheel centre line, and up to 40mm in the rest of the swept wiper area. Also a crack in the unswept area as long as it does not touch the outer edge in more than one place
