LPG Conversion

Featured Replies

Been looking into LPG conversions - did a search on here and it seems the VRS runs fine on it. Just one question for those who have a conversion - is the filler obtrusive? I'd like to have it hidden away if possible or at least not obvious from a distance. Does anyone know if they can be colour coded to match the vehicles paint?

~

Hi

My car has been converted for 18mths and runs very well. 1/2 price fuel a real bonus:thumbup:

my filler is low down on thye rear qtr panel and is black so colour matchs my car:rofl:

i am sure if you speak to the fitter the filler can be mounted anywhere including behind existing filler cover/behind numberplate etc

well worth doing!!!

Mine's red so would stand out a bit more than yours. Good idea about fitting behind the petrol cap - I'll check out the options.

The half price fuel sounds good - the price of petrol just seems to go up and up at the moment, what are you paying per litre?

Also how are you finding performance and what mpg are you getting?

MPG when driving on LPG goes down to 25, after my remap (and K&N) it is 27.

Any lower than that isn`t possible. (see my postings in a try for better economy :P)

Performance is good (LPG is like octane 100), but I won`t push it to far.

- when drivingstyle involves revlimiter (or near), there is less power compared to patrol. (no point driving on the edge then)

To spare the turbo I keep it on gas below 0.4 bar on average (gauge) and on the highway

not higher than 90 mph.

After all LPG is about economy, otherwise WRC would run it :P

Launche control at the traffic lights?: switching to octane 98.

Autobahn speeds?: again switching to octane 98.

Maybe others think I`m a wuss, but my car beats them in the papers on the long run. (costwise)

Beats them twice when switching to octane 98 enough

The LPG companies averagely won`t make an efford to build it in smooth and therefore

ram a hole in the rear bumper, that the customer than later has to paint over or so.

Don`t let them put it in the bumper, looks awfull. (sorry mates)

The option of the petrol cap isn`t gonna work, to small for it. (measured it, again at the LPG company)

I had to struggle quit hard for another option, but finally they did it for the same price.

A few pics attached with the result of my demand, try to get the same parts I would say

19283.attach

19285.attach

19286.attach

19290.attach

Price of LPG is about 51.9p per litre at the moment.

Performance is no different at all....to my mind anyway:)

Actual MPG is not as good as unleaded but £ for £ economy is equivilent to approx 60-70 MPG:thumbup:

I have my filler in the rear quarter pannel next to the fuel filler.

I have a silver vRS and it isn't colour coced but i'm not bothered.

One thing you should get fitted is a "Flash-Lube".

As LPG burns hotter than petrol and has less lubricants this will stop valve seats and guides burning out.

Is money well spent considering a new head/valves etc will cost over £1400.

From what i have read flashlube can also improve economy by giving a more complete combustion.

Hmm, not familiar with the product yet.

Did some research in Dutch forums, but a lot don`t know if it really helps or is just marketing...

Two problems with LPG:

- less cooling (higher temps)

- no lubricants in it

For the lubricants you can switch to ron98 once in a while. (maybe switch to more expensive, BP has it here)

For the cooling two options: drive slower (I keep it under 4bar/3500rpm) or get waterspray? :P

Nice!

A lot of forums say it has something to do with how "hard" the valves of the engine are.

A 225 engine has stronger valves if I`m correct, so that would make a vRS engine worth the thought for a cooling product?

out of interest how much did your various conversions cost you and do you get cheaper rate road tax now too as it is a hybrid??

Cheers

:)I'd highly recommend speaking to a company near me that does gas conversions called Tinley Tech. 01954 719002

The LPG costed me 1600 euro (about 1050quids) in 2006 thanks to the type (OHG),

asked the company a week ago however (for someone else) and it is 2000 euro (1300quids) these days.

Road tax is a third higher here in Holland, but given the amount of milages I do (22k a year) well worth it.

Took me one year to get the investment back and now laughing at the pump :) (I really do)

Also you have nice convesations sometimes with fellow LPG-drivers. ("how many miles have you done" etc)

At the traffic lights you can blow away and 1 mile later switch to economy again, try that with a Scooby, AMG, S4 or something

-- edit --

another thing, it isn`t a hybrid in our country. (you have to got "voltage" for that like Prius)

Also the earning back time was that quick since gasprices are lower, 51 eurocents at the moment (0,32pounds), Germay has your pricetag for LPG. (high for our standards)

But still worth it compared to ron98 prices

Thanks for the replies, definitely given me something to go on. There are a couple of companies not too far from me offering conversions - going to give them a call tomorrow for quotes.

Does anyone know if it affects the price of road tax in the UK as th4neuk suggested?

UK RFL is only £10pa cheaper.

My conversion (UK) was about £1600 and took about 18mths to recoup....now though its smiles at every fill up:thumbup:
