Petition against the banning of 10+yo cars

Featured Replies

So if the worst polluting cars are banned, surely the 4x4's would be banned as well??

Signed that, im wanting to do up an old mini soon, so this would not be good news! :(

Like so many of these petitions , they are campaigning against something that wasn't every going to happen anyway.

Total waste of time IMO

ive heard loads of stories like this, its been going on for at least a year iirc.

they couldnt ban those cars without compensation. they cant even give a total ban on smoking in case someone sues the governement, i think there would be some serious action if they were to try this!

my old vec gets a good 30 plus mpg. there are far newer cars that get far worse mpg than that. plus if they got rid of the 10 year old cars, imagine the environmental issues that would cause! not only all the cars on the road, but all the ones in the scrap yards already and any spare new bits would all have to be gotten rid of as they would be worthless too!

the task would be mind boggling!!

it may happen... one day.. but it would notbe a blanket ban... there would be a "process" to follow to keep a particular car on the road. if it gets rid of the **** heaps its a good thing.

As for most polluting - its not about mpg.. its about theoretical CO2 output in some test.....

1998 S reg Felicia, Ford Focus, Octavia, VW Golf, Vaxhaul Vectra....

All cars that many of us have on our drives or within the family... all 10 years old...

yes but non are classics... and on paper a greater accident/pollution liability than even the cheapest cars on sale now.

dont get me wrong i have a 20yr old bmw that would be long gone....

still i beleive its just not possible to get rid of 10 year old cars. theres still to many people making money and storing parts for them. its a logistical nightmare, and even to phase them out gradually would mean lots of people out of work, without transport etc. who woudl pay for all the cars to be destroyed? us of course and i know theres no way im paying for my own car to be destroyed!

how can a car that does an average of 9mpg be less of a polluter than my car at over 30mpg?

imoa they will just let the old cars die off naturally as they are making all new cars produce less and less co2 and making petrol more and more expensive will mean over all there will be less and less co2 being produced, almost like natural selection!. plus the government wont make a massive chunk of people very very unhappy!

i would take all these cars for free, then retire with my profits, scrap metal prices are through the roof, and the giant frag machines in liverpool could frag all of em in less than a month:thumbup:

Trust me getting rid of them is no problem, but the other points made are good ones:thumbup:

I think it would be ridiculous to do that... i can see the reason behind it... engine technology has moved on a bit since then and CO2 emissions have become lower on newer cars... but at this moment in time i can't afford anything else untill we've moved house and ive started my new job... so unless they are prepared to offer compensation and help for me to buy a new car then its unresonable.

Plus as said... what a HUGE operation to undertake!!!

the reason this idea is being discussed is basically to get old bangers off the road so criminals cant use them (instead nick/hijack newer cars). It also stops the **** squad from buying a 100 quid rust bucket/death trap and driving it with no tax or insurance etc. well its the theory and in theory not a bad one as all cars built these days can easily last 10 years with no problems.

The only way that anyone could enforce this is if the government were to either offer everyone free transport, or a grant to buy the cheapest car affordable at 5 years old. Neither of which are going to happen. Plus having old cars is going to be a license to print money by charging extra road tax, and at a guess I would tend to say that a 10 year old car is also less economical than its modern equivalent, therefore netting the government more money in fuel duty. As well as this there is the VAT they get from parts, which I would say older cars tend to need more often. Just my veiws, but can you see them banning old cars?

as has allready been said, this is not going to happen, ever, there are just too many problems in even trying to do it.

Its a daft idea, especially the amount of cars that are around over 10 years old! In our household 4 out of the 5 cars are over 10 years old! Where would that leave us?! It is also a matter of what people can afford, I hope to upgrade to something better soon, though with the current prices it will still be 7 years old, so in a few years time I would be up against it again!

Also what would happen to people who like their classic cars? And spent £1000's restoring them!

Apathy, that's the way to take a stance and make a better world

I can totally see and understand why this would be a good thing.

As said above it would probably cut crime down a bit...

But there's just sooooo many obstacles to overcome to even start thinking about putting it into action... and if it does happen it will be a gradual thing...

In regards to nicking older cars... my car is over 10 years old... but it can't be started without my key... which im sure most car thiefs are aware of (which cars are imobilised and not etc).

Signed that. my dad has a MGB soft top and im looking at getting a VW split screen camper van:thumbup:

Autoexpress writes "The worry is that a system about to be trialled in Stuttgart, Germany, will provide a model that councils in this country could follow."

Not only Stuttgart but also Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne and Munich were the city centres have been proclaimed "environmental zones". Regulations are decided on city council level so they may differ, but Berlin's are found here (English version):

http://www.berlin.de/sen/umwelt/luftqualitaet/de/luftreinhalteplan/download/Umweltzone_Broschuere_en.pdf

Petrol cars with cats are not affected. Diesel cars must meet Euro 2 standards, from 2010 Euro 5 standards.

In Berlin, at least, classic and vintage cars will be allowed to enter the zone but with a maximum driving range of 700 km p.a. (500 km from 2010).

OK, one never knows what the next step will be, but a simple 10 year ban is not what's been put into force in Germany.

BTW, these rules apply for foreign cars too, so if any Briskodian contemplates a trip to Germany, check whether you'll need an "Umwelt" sticker on your car!

how can a car that does an average of 9mpg be less of a polluter than my car at over 30mpg?

I think the main thing would be how long each engine was run a year (ie annual mileages). Most cars which average 9mpg will be weekend and possibly only fair-weather cars which means that their actual annual pollution is not that significant compared to cars which do a lot less polluting per mile, but are run for significantly more miles per year.

Chris

Making the car creates far more pollution than the car will ever put out in it's working life however so destroying running cars is environmentally not good.
