Smoke from oil filler cap

Featured Replies

When I top up my engine oil (TDI VRS), there's a small amount of smoke (or at least fumes) visible when the filler cap is removed. This is generally 5-10 minutes after the engine has been running.

Anything to worry about? Not sure whether this is normal as this is my first diesel. The car has done around 7500 miles since I bought it new 6 months ago.

Are you sure it's smoke and not a bit of vapour?

It could be. Just that I'm not used to anything coming out on previous (petrol) engines so wanted to make sure.

What kind of vapour are you referring to? Is it evaporated oil?

Don't really know - I just know I've seen it myself topping up while the engine's still warm (I know you're supposed to wait 'til it's cold! :o Unless it's a 1.2 ;) )

3.5 years and 60k down the line, I've not had any problems with the engine!

You can get a bit of oil or water vapour coming out of the filler cap depending on how hot the engine is.

Wouldn't worry about it IMHO

My PD140 does that too - I'm sure its fine.

You should really wait till the engine is cool (or certainly cooler than it will be after 10 mins).

But if you're at the side of the road with an oil light or something on then topping it up asap won't be an issue.

I put a litre in mine today and noticed some vapour.

Glad it doesn't seem to be a problem.

(Note to Self: If you are going to try to save money by buying cheap from Opie Oils, it would be a good idea to keep some of the stuff actually in the car. Then, if your oil light comes on, and you are not going to be back home for another 300 miles, you can make use of it. Numpty )

Must check mine, come to think of it...
