Halford's paint stick tips for the artistically-challenged?

Featured Replies

Have had enough of a deep stone chip on the bonnet, and several smaller ones on the painted grille.

After asking several mates who are handy with painting, to take a look at it, as well as one SWMBO, all to no avail, have decided to tackle this daunting challenge myself.

Problem is that I am pretty carp when it comes to any sort of painting effort...

Any useful tips from those who have done any DIY paint touch-up?

Thanks for any tips, helpful or otherwise,

Cheers

Bas

Shake well

Use slightly warm

Use little often rather than alot at once

Read somewhere to use cocktail sticks - so you only apply a tiny amount, then gradually build it up.

Yep cocktail sticks or cotton buds and build it up a little at a time - don't use the built in brush or you'll get too much paint on and an awful finish. Reminds me - must tend to mine at some point

Cotton buds sound like a good idea to me, thanks for that

You could use a needle of sorts too, all you need is a tiny amount of paint on the tip and it drops into the chip nicely.

I just lob loads of paint all over the scratch, leave it a couple of days, wet sand then polish/wax lol.

i use one of my daughters paint brushes cut down to a couple of hairs on it!! you could go to a specialised hobby shop like games workshop and by a 000 size brush.

Also, don't use Halfords paint, especially if you have a silver Fabia. It's too dark and your car will look like it's got acne.

The dealer paint is a much better match, but the brushes in them are just as crap. I went to hobbycraft and bought a size 00 artists brush. Much better.

Open up a paper clip and use end of that is also another good tool.

Sounds good ;) - I may just have to do something like that with the Estate, it's nearing 231k, probably hitting that next week I guess, and it's got a few minor spots that want attending to - that said it all depends on what's worth it :)
