ESP upgrade, can it be done?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if its possible to retrofit the VRS WRC edition ESP into a regular VRS. I have heard only good things about ESP unlike the crappy ASR on the regular model which I usually turn off because it scares me everytime I pull out at junctions and roundabouts.

In theory yes.

Practically however the way to do it is to sell the car and buy one with ESP.

This is because you would need to change so many parts the cost would be ridiculous.

I'm not so sure its that difficult? Is it just a controller that needs to be changed??

I'm sure I read about this on here a while back. I think somebody posted a list or parts and it was quite extensive.

nah, you need shed loads of stuff..... gyroscopes, yaw sensors, steering angle sensors , hydraulic pumps, ect ect ect... it will use the standard abs sensors though i would have thought!

I apologise for the lack of smilies in the above post... it was very much tongue in cheek.

It costs £500 as an option for a reason.

no tom sadly its not that easy because as Mr.Rider mentioned there's a million gazillion sonsors with esp :)

i'm not sure about the standard abs setup on the octavia but i think esp needs a 4 circuit system as it breaks wheels individually.

the cost as mentioned would be crazy and probably more than buying another car.

sell yours, buy a 4x4 and mod it to greater spec than the vRS for probably 1-2k in total seeing as 4x4 can be had for about 2k upwards now, which is amazing value for money!

whats the diff between asr and epc also when i start my standard octy i see a light on the dash for esp do i have it or not?

I was debating getting a WRC version one day its just a bit loud if you know what I mean. I like the understated VRS colours, you get less bothered by boy racers and the like.

Do you have a button on your dash which says ASR or ESP?

Are you sure it's not an EPC light?

I was just thinking to myself the other day how I like ASR and I can't see the point of ESP. A friend has an Audi S4 Quattro and it brakes for you on fast corners? Isn't the point of 4 wheel drive grip? What problems are you having with ASR?

If you don't see the point in having ESP... watch this:

grip and traction are very different things.

about as different as going round a corner and not ;)

asr is ok if you get the clutch release/throttle just right but if you don't it can leave you stranded hence I tend to turn it off, had a few hairy moments at roundabouts which could have been worse than the angry looks from drivers i'm crawling into the paths of. I now only use it if its really slippy out there:rolleyes: ESP is more useful as it helps you round corners if you over cook them which to me is more what traction control should be about. ASR is basically a very bad launch control system it seems. Some have changed their octis with the Audi S3 ASR system, is it any better than skoda's?

Sorry Lex, my ASR is superb, I boot the throttle going uphill in the wet, feel the wheels spin, see the dash light up, grip and i'm away. What more could you want? The only time I have ever not got away quick enough is because the noob behind the wheel let the clutch out at 1000 rpm and I have to wait for the turbo....Can't blaim the car for that!

But.... My car is standard maybe this is a problem for tuned cars.

whoops :P

Just watched the 5th gear teat, driving 70 mph on sheet ice ESP is a boon! I don't think any sane person would disagree. What I said was Audi S4 V8 quattro roundabout, the car brakes for you, all it really needs is ASR(maybe it should be switchable?). If I was driving my vRS on ice ESP thank you very much!

Aftermarket alternative at link below: possibly expensive, and I haven't tried it personally

Traction_Control

...but bear in mind their own warning

prolonged spark cut is not recommended for catalytic equipped cars.

But surely it only brakes as much as it needs to inorder to prevent a spin?

yup thats the point so id it hadn't applied the brakes im sure that teh corner would have been taken backwards

I think he wanted to slide alittle (I am not speaking from experience on this one) however turn it off and it is too easy to smoke the wheels

Sliding in a front wheel drive car isn't rewarding anyway (unless you can get the back out like they do on 5th gear)

Get a rear ARB and you can :orb_rocki

Mine will still go sideways with ESP turned on... it's just less fun than it is with it turned off. It will still understeer until the cows come home and with the rear ARB the tail will come out very easily.

To my knowledge, I've only had ESP cut in once and I'm very glad it did. It's quite impressive when you're all set to end up backwards and the car sorts it out for you :D
