A simpletons Fabia Vrs Oil question (sorry)

Featured Replies

right, i just want to make sure what the garage told me is correct... got my Fabia up to 7k miles now (soon getting them up :D) and the Skoda garage mechanic type bloke told me that using ordinary 10W-40 would be fine... i've since looked in the manual / booklet thing and it mentions 5.00.05 (or something like that) - have i ballsed up?

I put Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W-40 in (which i used to put in my Citreon HDi 110bhp Turbo Diesel)... however that wasn't a PD engine and i'm unsure if this will make a difference...

anyone? :)

My understanding is that you MUST use a spec VW 505 01 oil in the PD-engined Fabia.

at my last service (main dealer) they put in magnatec, so you should be ok

See this thread for recent discussion on this topic.

Text removed due to me getting my wires crossed....nothing new there :D

VW 505 01 is a diesel-spec multigrade high lubricity oil, Geoff!

I bow to your greater knowledge Denis, wish they'd stop using all these stupid bloody numbers and recommend a type of oil instead.

I've got a Alhambra with the same (130) engine. When I needed a top up I called three main dealers for advice. One said use any diesel oil, one checked the workshop and said they use magnatec and the third said that you MUST use VW 505 01 spec oil - only the last one was correct. If some muppet, especially a main dealer has put anything but this in I would ask SERIOUS questions and get it corrected immediately as well as asking for a refund these people are totally incompetant. Whilst it may not cause longterm damage - check with skoda - it is NOT the oil recommended by VW who make the engines. These people deserve to be named and shamed.

Your not alone, theres loads of such stories one the Galaxy (sorry for using such language here) site.

Personally I would stick with the specified oil. 505.01. I used 506.01 as I can't see why it can be used in variable servicing engines, but not static when they use the same mechanicals!

cheers - will go out and buy some of that then!!!

can't believe a skoda dealer told me the wrong oil! :( :( :( :(

will i have caused any damage... filled it up from bottom divot of dipstick to halfway just to see me through last weekend...

I wish we could get to the absolute truth of this never ending question, there seem to be so many people saying so many things.

I'm totally baffled and bemused by the whole damned subject.

Is there just a small possibility that the vag group are saying you've got to use 505 01 spec oil 'cus we want to have your kecks down AND the shirt off your back?

I really wish we could get to the bottom of this mystery. Will we ever, and will we ever believe what we are told

My main dealer insists that I HAVE to use it to maintain warranty.

Where do we all go from here.....apart from the bank!!!

C.J.

The ONLY oil you can use in a vRS Fabia is 505.01, even 506.01 is not suitable. The 505.01 is specially formulated to lubricate the extreme loads on the cam due to the P.D. injector pumps.

My dealer doesn't know what oil is needed either and gave me 506.01 first and then 505.00 (01/97), both of which are wrong. Fortunately I didn't use either and got 505.01 from my local accessory shop. Try Millers XFE-PD, a good oil and great value too

any ideas?... or am i being paranoid

You will probably be o.k. with less than a litre.

Is the car new?, if it is I would change the oil anyway after it had done 2-3000 miles. This was something that was always done in years gone by and I suspect the only reason it isn't done now is to keep down the cost of owning the car in it's first 3 years. The less servicing it has means the cost per mile figure is kept low and after all this is what fleet buyers are always looking at.

506 01 is formulated to do likewise AND has a life of up to 30,000 miles when used in the Octavia PD on variable servicing.

I rang the Castrol tech helpline and asked them about using SLX LonglifeII. The technician was familiar with VW pd oil requirements and the differences in service schedules and he told me that 506.01 is not suitable for the Fab. vRS due to it's lighter viscosity, 0w 30 as opposed to 5w 40. He said that 505.01 was the only suitable oil (strange that 506.01 used in variable service 130p.d.'s, I know) and 506.01 would cause increased scuffing of the piston skirt (ooo-er!).

It does also says on the longlife II bottle that it is unsuitable for cars that call for 505.01 in there manual. This was the warning that got me to ring Castrol in the first place. It would appear to be solely a viscosity issue.

Hope that makes sense

had it with 4800miles and just hit 7000 today so only done just over 2000 myself (in a month or so :() - it was an ex-demo so hoping it was looked after quite well by the dealership anyways... will go and get the real deal from my local VAG garage later...
