Oil Change

Featured Replies

Hey guys, this job might sound the most simple in the world but read on:

Despite having it serviced only 5k miles ago my oil warning came up on my dash. Hoping it wasn't dicky pressure I stopped immediately and grabbed my owner's manual. Apparently I need to change the engine oil.

I've done this before myself on all the cars I've owned. I go outside this morning armed with a bit of cardboard to lay on and a new container of diesel oil, I lay down take a look under the car and what do I find? I dirty great bit of plastic! WTF is this? Why can't these damned cars be simple?

So I was just wondering if there was anything else I need to know before changing my oil. Is this plastic cover easy to remove? Do I need a special tool set to release it? And is sump easily accessible once it's removed?

I appreciate any help you guys can give me I REALLY don't wanna have to book it in with my local garage just for a F***ing oil change.

When you say 'oil warning', do you just mean the service notice on the trip meter? The Fabia runs on fixed servicing, so if the oil was done at the last service, then your garage has just forgotten / neglected to reset the service indicator. The oil in the Fabia will last 10k.

Yeah it's in the trip computer. What you say sounds pretty likely! There's no strange noises or anything that I would associate with needing an oil change badly.

How do I go about resetting the service meter?

And just for my own knowledge how do you get the plastic thing off?

The reset method varies depending on trim and age (e.g. it's different on my wife's Comfort compared to my vRS). The method that applies to your car will be in the manual. A search on here will find you an answer to your undertray question!

And yes the undertray comes off. Several torx screws

Don't forget to buy a new sump plug as these are usually single use items on the skoda engines.

Mine did this 2 months after a service

Just reset the service light

P.S. I was wondering about oil changes the other day..... is it worth doing two oil changes a year, I do about 8k miles a year.

Would it be wise to get the oil changed halfway between one service and the next or will one oil change a year be sufficient?

I was looking at the Nat Tyres offer of an oil and filter change (Castrol 5w30 fully synthetic) for £28.

And yes the undertray comes off. Several torx screws

Or lots of zip ties in my case

You can easily see the sump plug from there. If you do ever do the oil, get a new plug washer (may even be a new plug itself), I can't remember.

Beat me to it :D

Hey all. Just resurrecting an old thread of mine, instead of starting a new one.

A little while ago my mile-o-meter started flashing "oil". After asking on here, and the fact it had only been serviced 4k ago, I concluded sum1 in the car's past had reset the service interval counter incorrectly. So, I've been ignoring it waiting for my next service before resetting it.

Today however it started to display this,

inspec.jpg

Should I be worried?

It depends what makes you worry ;)

It's now indicating that the car thinks it needs an inspection service (ie a major one).... and I'm guessing from the mileage it will be the 60k service.
