Bruised Furby

Featured Replies

Well I crashed the Furby today, luckily only minor damage. Some asian guy decided to turn right through a queue of stationary traffic and I had no time to react as I was driving down the left hand lane at about 15 mph....

Going to need a new bumper

The guy was alright about it though, and apologised and admitted fault, so hopefully that will be ok.

Just thought I'd share the start of my weekend with you...

Sorry to hear this mate. Hope all gets sorted soon!

Another one... Hunting season is officially open ;)

it's only metal...

Noticed the wing seems to be bent as well. I get the impression the guy thought I was just going to bodge it up, he seemed to be very keen to settle with cash rather than insurance, but I'd imagine it'll cost loads to replace the wing + bumper on a vRS?

Just hope the guy is insured...

I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

Doesnt look as bad in the pictures as it does when you see it in the metal. Not terrible damage but its going to be costly. By my reckoning, the wing is definitely bent and the bumper is almost certainly completely unfixable - it has bits smashed of it and is quite badly cracked.

I have been in touch with the guy who's fault it was, and he seems VERY keen to settle out of insurance regardless of the cost, making me seriously wonder whether he has insurance, but nevertheless, if we can resolve it amicably then all the better AFAIC.

yup , the wing defo looks bent, my guess isa new bumper + fitting will be about 500 notes. (going on the price of my octy bumper) and to get the wing reshaped, not sure extra 100 notes maybe?

always hurts when your pride and joy is damaged... :(

Don't bother messing around with cash payments. Pass all his details onto your insco and let them sort it out. If you don't think he has insurance all the more reason to do this as its one step towards getting him taken off the road.

Good advice from Dr z. Years ago someone collided with my car (one of my Dad's workmates), agreed to pay for the repair, then wouldn't because he thought the repair was too expensive.

Hope you get it sorted without too much trouble

Definetly get your insurance co. on the case. Do you have legal cover as part of your policy? I think the insurance companies have a slush fund to pay for damage casued by uninsured drivers if he fails to pay when he sees the final cost.

If he wasn't insured lets get him charged and done.

Steve

The motor insurers bureau are the people who pay out if he turns out to be uninsured.

As denis has said , the parts are going to be under 200 quid , but the labour on top of that will be another few hundred quid , plus there is the cost of a courtesy car while yours is away.

Did the other driver strike you as the sort of person who would have that much money lying around?. He was probably expecting a couple of hundred quid tops to respray a bumper.

The only thing I'd do before phoning your insurers is to pop round to his house and make sure that he has given you the correct details. If not then get the police involved asap as well.

One thing to bear in mind, though - if he's willing to stump up cash, regardless of whether he's insured or not, then get the cash off him STRAIGHT AWAY (after getting quotes from garages).

If you let it go through insurance/MIB, then IT WILL DRAG OUT, you may lose NCB, you'll certainly lose excess and it won't get him taken off the road. These people who drive uninsured will drive illegally otherwise, regardless of whether they've been taken to court or not.

The MIB pays out uninsured losses ie. Personal Injury. They won't pay out for the repair of your car, unless they're sure they can get the money back off the 3rd party.

Believe me. I'm talking from experience. Accident 4th August 2003 with an uninsured w@nk3r who did a runner; still waiting for a decision on payout from the MIB. Down to 1 years NCB and have lost my excess because I had to claim off my own insurance which is what you'll have to do too...

Mumphie,

I think its probably too far down the line now. I have now established that the car definitely has mechanical damage as well, and now my car is being repaired as from this morning as instructed from the insurance company.

My no claim bonus is protected, but I have told the insurance company that the guy wishes to pay himself. Its out of my hands now.

I hear ya though, it seems like the honest ones are the ones who get punished these days.

Yeah. The *good* thing to do (being law abiding, insured, careful drivers) in these cases would be to get the money off the 3rd party ASAP. That way, you get the car sorted out in the quickest time with the minimum of fuss. However, the *right* thing to do would be to report them and go through the proper channels. However, this almost always affects us negatively in some way, be it NCB, excess or delays in repairs.

Good luck with your case and I hope it pans out smoothly and quickly!

Well I rang up today and found out the full extent of the damage.

The bumper and wing need to be replaced. The Turbo intercooler was cracked (3-inch crack in that) and also had to be replaced. Hopefully I should get it back, good as new, next week. :)

Paul glad to hear it's all being sorted. :D Did you find out if the guy who hit you was insured, or has he already stumped up the full cash for the repair?

Chris

What had you decided to do about the other driver?

Did you just pass his details on to your insurers or are you offering him the cash alternative. How much is the repair bill out of interest?

I've just rang the insurance company, and the man has been in contact with them and the insurance company has told me they have pretty much admitted liability. They said that it would be difficult for him to get out of it now... and they have all his details, so its now out of my hands.

So I am pleased about that!! And I cant wait to get the car back now! :D

Looks like it's going to be a happy ending, then! Well done! Sounds like he's insured at least...

I got a letter today from my insurance company telling me that their attempts to regain the money from him had been unsuccesful and they are intending to take him to court for it. I had to fill out a form detailing exactly what happenned, and so it looks like I may get a day out in court.

I am suprised its taken this long to get to here, still it is an insurance company.

Can they not just claim the money off his insurance company or has he done something legally binding which says he will pay up himself?

Dont know to be honest Chris, I think he might have offered to pay up until he realised how much it would cost, and then tried to wiggle out of it. Its all speculation on my part though. Whatever the case, he is in it up to his neck now, by the sounds of it.
