SpitFire Engine modified to fit in a road car

Featured Replies

Er, check the registration canny lass! It's the same car re-bodied!

Ah yes but the first one caught fire so the new body is a rebuild. I remember seeing pictures of the first car and hence the Pink Panther comment, the second picture looks like something out the Matrix when those things started to cut into the goodies spaceship:D

I remember seeing a picture of it when I was younger and am pretty sure it had 6 wheels. But I am also pretty certain it didn’t do 300mph. Funnily enough, the posting/quote I made above pretty much confirmed what I remember about this guy and his car.

The one that was supposed to do 300 wasn't the 6 wheel one. The six wheel one was on Blue Peter Trying to break a record if I'm sad enough to remember. I'm fairly sure, but stand to be corrected, that the 300 one was green and burnt down in Switzerland?

No idea about Dodd good or bad.

And then there is always Babs - world land speed record holder from 1936 I believe that was originally powered by a 27 litre Liberty engine but from memory (it was found, dug up, restored and is owned by someone I used to work with) she is now powered by a merlin engine.goodwoodlsrcars---15.jpg

Don’t those Drag truck thingys (the ones that have a large weight that moves up a trailer) have several Spitfire or similar engines all bolted together.

tractor pulling , they can have various engines on them , including helicopter turbine engines

That’s the jobbies, but they do use old Merlin engines don’t they???

Thanks very much for all the linkage and photos. really appreciate it. Dodd's car sounded a bit of a monster/let down, but I just loved the Jay Leno Tank Car..

That is just awesome !! :D

I remember seeing an article in Custom Car back in the 80s about a Rolls Royce lookalike car with a Merlin in it , it looked like an estate and was Brown metallic coloured , I wonder if it was that Capri style thing? I remember it had 4 aircraft fuel pumps in it to keep fuel pressure up , and the owner had just emigrated to Spain around the time the article was published....

If that doesn't work just search on UK Drag Racing Nostalgia

I remember reading about this car in a motor mag back in the late 60's. It was cobbled together from a variety of cars, the grill was nicked from a Rolls Royce while the screen was taken from a Jenson FF. It was an incredibly long brute but looked awesome. It had a claimed top speed in excess of 200 mph. As the engine was a low rev unit the builder had placed a step-up box somewhere in the drive chain, I believe it was between the engine and gearbox. It was capable of delivering almost 1 mile to the gallon if you took it easy.
