Is diesel worth it? What to buy....?

Featured Replies

Will be changing my car soon.......

(Well between now and sept when the warranty is up...)

Currently have diesel. (407 Coupe GT) But not that enamoured with it (diesel - not the car.. which i really like but dont like the noise or the narrow power band)..

my criteria:-

prob cover 40-50k per annum of which 30+ is motorway cruising 80-90mph.

must avg over 30mpg whole life.

must have (non negotiable): cruise, auto lights, auto wipers, ipod input, nav.

2 seats is fine not arsed if more.

must be sub 7.5 secs to 60.

must not cost more than 200pa to tax

cannot be any renault/nissan as disagree with them funding motorsport terrorism via Nando Bonso.

cost is not much of an issue upto 400pcm new/used

current thinking is 207 HTP 175 GTI or poss the twin turb 215 HP version if they hit the uk in time.... but what else is there? love 1 ser but mileage kills em on PCP.... ?

dunno if these meet all your criteria but iwould consider

123d

130d

330d

335d

530d

535d

if you dont like BMW's

A4 3.0 TDI

A5 3.0 TDI

Or you can be really greedy and go for the R8 Diesel when its launched

Shame you don't do Nissans (and are so fussy about 0-60 times) as otherwise the Micra 160 SR would fit the bill ;)

Know what you mean about diesel though - lacks a certain something!

thanks for the reply... but they are all diesel... and the point is I dont like diesel.....

oops thought u were looking for diesel.

in that case get the petrol version in each of them

Love the way you aren't fussed about monthly cost, but care about £200 to tax

Any reason something like the Leon Cupra K1 isn't worth a look?

Mini Cooper S Works?

Mazda MX-5 2.0 sport! You know you want to...

car allowance covers the monthly. but not road tax. and i have a suspicion that 200 now will turn into 1000 shortly. thus one that 400 now will turn into 2500 +

either of those is an option... although K1 may be too high on co2...?

the issue with the works is that the initial cost will prob be too much as pcp wont work for that kind of mileage.

I thought the budget had confirmed what car tax will be in 2010/11, and its £270 for the K1 in that year. :)

Although it will be over £200 for the tax the Saab 9-3 Aero 2.0T seems to fit the bill, lot more comfy over long distances than the 207. :)

since when can you trust a labour govt ???

as for the Saab - its an option but surely a vectra is a better VFM option?

K1 is just the Cupra with a gay bodykit.

What about the new A4, or even the A5

too much depreciation.. and i object to paying for the four rings...

Got to say that the BMW 123d has to be close to fitting the bill even tho' it's a diesel. I haven't driven one, but the figures on paper look mighty impressive.

And the best thing is, by driving it you don't have to look at it

Failing that, what's wrong with a vRS Octavia TFSi, that must tick most, if not all of your boxes?

Is Peugeot not affiliated with Renault?

BMW 3 series diesels would fit your remit.

I didnt want to incur your wrath by mentioning the 'V' word :)

no.. peugeot and citroen are tied, and have links with BMW and Ford for engine development. ....and not if i dont want a diesel....

what i cant understand at the mo is why BMW doesnt put its joint PSA/BMW 1.6 turbo in the 1 ser.... 116ti with 175 hp and sub 160 CO2 would surely be a winner....

But the 120i already has 170bhp and sub 160 co2's

but its not turbo and would be lower co2 with the 1.6 turbo.... with more torque... and remappable...

therefore about 300% more interesting.

Why not put that engine in the BMW Mini though...

Hold on a minute :rubchin:

Cooper S it is then! :P

for about 6k more than the 207 octane with nav .... spec for spec.....:thumbdwn:

Sounds like you've already made your mind up ?

no just being logical.

what i want doesnt currently exist...

which would be this:-

2007-peugeot-308-rcz-concept2.jpg

but cant have that in time for my change date....

For you, yes... but not for your average company car driver..

petrols are a dying breed in that respect.. BMW are leading the way in "green" cars at the moment
