Dodgy Mileage on Fabia VRS for Sale

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Just went to look at a Fabia Vrs in Black, HPi'd the car and mileage didnt add up, could be legit, but if I didnt HPi it then sold it on, just saved myself alot of hassle.

All the history looked ok, even skoda garage said they think its ok, but there was a 13 month gap on the history where skoda didnt work on it, his friend or brother did, so I walked away:thumbdwn:, as its not worth the bother.

Phone the mileage register and they said can he supply history for a certain month, which he couldnt, as i said this could be a genuine mistake, but I phone the guy and said I am bailing, you need to sort this not me, I think they are gonna take to skoda, I cant believe when I told Skoda they didnt care  what i had found out. abit of a shocker really , I HPi every car, they might not always be right but as long as its in my favour I am happy.

I would have done the same and walked away - plenty more cars out there  Was it a private sale or on a dealer forecourt? I guess if it's out of warranty, SUK won't be interested, but if the mileage has been adjusted (and misrepresents the actual mileage of the car) the police may well be interested....

Isn,t the original mileage stored in the ECU so that it is tamperproof? Just something i heard about on here.

Yes on most TDi ECU's it can be read with VAG-COM.

How do you mean the mileage was dodgy?

But if you didn't like the situation etc then you're right to walk away.

Just because there is a "gap" in the HPI doesn't necessarily mean anything.

my mileage will have stopped after a certain point cause mines done at an independent garage but I keep a full record of any work done on my car.

When I went to see it, the stamps were there, but when HPi checked it they said they had a record of 60000 on the clock, this could have been when he got the new tires (might have been entered wrong but might not have), the guy had no record of mileage for about 12 months so anything could have happened, also his brother serviced his car last so even longer (his bro owned the garage) it was probably fine, but if I went on to sell it, say to one of you guys and you HPid it, its gonna flag up again, not worth the grief.

As for clocking and not being able to, that could be the case, but as with anything where theres a will theres a way.

As for the mileage database, it get its numbers from everywhere, Mot certificates, I am guessing at national tire centres etc etc.

It just felt wrong I guess. still drove well though. my first drive in a vrs after a civic type r and I was impresses, once its moving its good fun

My fabia is out or warranty and we do basic oil and filter changes ourselfs at home. I have all the recipts to show that it is Skoda parts used - why waste money on a dealers for this sort of basic stuff?

When I do come to sell the car it may put a few buyers off, but the amount of money I save I can knock a few quid off the car if needs be.

Same here, plus the fact that no-one will want my fabia after i have thrashed it to within an inch of its life ;)

200+bhp fabia anyone???

Whilst I commend your actions it is also wise to remember that there is more to an annual/12k service than Oil & Filter change.

Mine only has a generic one click on it, that in itself might be enough to put some people off, although I do very rarely thrash mine.

Major services such as cam belt will be done at a garage of some description, not decided yet.

I agree, servicing should include brake and underbody inspections. etc

Also software updates and recalls wont be done if your car never find its way to a dealer ;)

Brakes have been bled once and had the pads on the front replaced, all vag com checked as well, never failed an MOT.

20,000 miles and not cost more than about £100 in servicing.

All you need is VAG Tacho to adjust the mileage. IIRC the engine ECU doesnt record the mileage, its just information communicated via the dash clutster.

Pollen filter, fuel filter inspection are just some of the items to be carried out.

There are other things such as goodwill offers for cars with a FSkSH such as the common engine bay wiring loom which is over £900 to buy but will be supplied FOC if you have a FSkSH.

I think it is seperate mate -

Ross-Tech: VAG-COM Tour: Applications

[EDC-15 Mileage] On some (but by no means all) TDI ECUs, VAG-COM can show an independent "odometer" reading stored in the ECU. EDC-15 is found in some 2000 and newer engines but is NOT used in US-market Mk4 PD engines nor is it used in

the newest vehicles that use CAN-Bus diagnostics like the Mk5 Jetta TDI. This can useful as a means of cross-checking the mileage on used car at time of purchase, particularly in Europe where odometer fraud is rampant. We plan to extend this functionality to as many ECUs as practical in the future.

This makes interesting reading I start off saying not sure about mileage and this talk turns to servicing, my point I was getting across was car just seemed abit dodgy, having reputable dealers even a good local garage not just skoda, might have saved this guy sale but, his paper work was bad, those little sheets of paper are worth so much when a buyer like me turns up.

Better not ever try to sell mine then. :o

No record of servicing as I keep a log in my head of the last work and I just go out and buy filter/oil when I think around 7k has passed since the last one. Other things are inspected as and when - I'll be doing to full check when my head is changed, including the pistons and cylinder bores. :D Skoda doesn't do that now, do they.

:rofl::rofl: Skoda won,t do or never will either.They don,t give a ...........

would have suggested clocking, but with a digital readout, got me stumped:D

would have to go with the larger alloys theory without ajusting:rolleyes:

Yeah doubt skoda would, if thats your car in the pic looks well nice, but nah wouldnt even touch it if looking for a car, no history no sale. Do you keep reciepts of what you have bought, then you would have some history at least.

My Type R if some thing was done to it I kept the receipt, all adds up for a easy sale, 6 days on autotrader. Job Done.

My car has full Skoda history, but at the last service, before I collected it, they forgot to replace the pollen filter, plugs and air filter. Don't even get me started on the brakes...

It still has all the right stamps in the book though and as far as good will from Skoda UK when the car is out of warranty goes, don't bank on it. Even with well documented common faults like door water leaks.
