Overtaking rant

Ok...

So there's a nice dual carrage just up from where I live, was coming back from food shopping.... start the dual carrageway and go to overtake a shogun, pull out a good few car lengths before as the road was empty (I was probably doing 70ish) and the shogun pulls into the middle of the dual carrageway making me have to swerve and nearly hit the center?!

I gave him a toot and he flashed his lights loads at me?

What is wrong with people? Perfectly safe overtake which nearly ended in a crash at 70mph because some loser either doesn't know the size of his stupid car, doesn't want me to overtake or hasn't seen me.

I wish I could legally kill people sometimes :thumbup:

happens to me all the time, i used to think people did it deliberately til i actually realised that 95% of people who are on the roads shouldnt be!

The trick I love best is when someone speeds right up when you are overtaking them. They then proceed to sit right up your chuff therafter.

Why???

F**k knows, but i'm actually concerned about the upcoming brake upgrade just because of the tail gaters.

Suddenly realised if i have to do an emergency stop then I will stop quicker than the idiot expect and what with them being too close anyway things don't look good :(

Downright dangerous :thumbdwn:

I had a **** the other day, I was out testing the prospective new car & was stuck behind a freelander at 35 in a 60 for over a mile, found a small but do able gap so duly nailed it past him with ease rolled the speed back to an indicated 70, 10 over but with speedo errors license safe. Within 1/2 a mile he had caught me up & proceeded to tailgate me WTF was he trying to proove

But at least you will stop, what he does is his problem.

yep, that and the fact that youll get a new car and a nice claim in, and possibly the opportunity to knock him into next week for hitting you

:P I don't need to worry about overtaking in my cars! :D

I normally dont like to generalise but in this case 4X4 drivers are definitely the worst, especially Freelander Sports.

I've had numerous ones tailgaiting me, overtaking in 30mph zones, flashing their lights at me when I overtake.

I really dont know why, the way I see it is they bought a girly 4x4 in the first place, because they couldnt afford a range rover as some sort of "status enhancer", so when they get overtaken by a small Skoda it must do their ego some major damage.

I hate those who in a 50 limit for example drive at 35/40, then when the limit changes to 30, they continue on at 40.

I also hate those who have a problem with me driving the speed limit, do they have something to prove or something?!

Yep, this is one of my pet hates. Another one is as I do 30mph in a 30mph area, I invariably get people tailgating me. However, they often then go to overtake as soon as they see the derestricted signs (often overtaking while still in the 30). Only they proceed to accelerate to maybe 50mph or so and slow down excessively for any slight curve in the road, so then I'm stuck behind them. Fools.

Another thing I find very irritating is when I have the cruise control on the motorway and I go to overtake someone (at the same speed still, say they're doing 60mph or something and I'm doing 70) but as I go past them they accelerate, which means I have to either accelerate myself or brake and pull back in. They will usually slow down / speed up after though. Boils down to people's inability to maintain a constant speed.

Cruise does my head in on motorways, i overtake the same cars up to 10 times sometimes :S

Because some stupid people see it as a personal affront if they get overtaken.

Yep I'm with you 100% there Rob. I do about 50k a year for work (95% motorway) and about 10k personal mileage and that it probably one of THE most irritating things (to me anyway!)

i must admit all of he above irritate me,i'm a 30 in a 30 and 40 in a 40 limit most of the time,de ristrictions are treat at my descretion, but i've had people tailgate through a 30 and my favorite sport is when i hit the nsl signs i gunn it,just as they try to pass usually,my observation is not much keeps with a non standard fabia out of a 30 or 40,not even if they are 1/2 way past:D

I get all sorts of daft reactions when I overtake people in my L-plate Favorit. Almost all the cars I've ever driven regularly have been things that in common perception are not supposed to go fast, and people often react by tearing after me far quicker than they wanted to. The ultimate manifestation of that behaviour was something that happened to a friend of mine, Tim, an ex-Formula 3 and rally driver who knows a bit about car handling, who was tanking up the A1 in a Ford Cortina (this was a few years ago) with a Daimler V8 engine in it. A couple of lively lads in a Beemer were so offended by his overtaking them that they stuck to his tail like glue, including coming off the A1 on one of its many very tightly-twisted slip roads. Tim flung the car round the left-hander: the guy in the Beemer panicked, hit the anchors far too hard, and slid gracefully into a road sign.

When this happens to me it annoys the fook outta me for the rest of the day:thumbdwn:

You just got to realise that there is a lot of t0ssers out there. Also the fact that a skoda has just overtaken them does not help ;).

I hate it on the motorways, when your doing a steady 70mph & overtake someone doing 60mph, pull in & carry on doing the steady 70mph, then that same person you have just overtaken, speeds up & overtakes you then pulls in then & you end up having to overtake him again. It bugs the life out of me!

Will you? Surely if the standard brakes are able to lock up the wheels then in an emergency stop situation you will stop at exactly the same rate? You'll still have the same tyres which should still have the same grip levels regardless of the size of the brakes?

If people are up my ar5e i normally either,

slow right down to a crawl and then go back up to the speed limit,

Put the brakes on so they then realise they are to close,

And if all that fails and they are just driving up my a55 for the sake of it i do 1 of 2 things depending what sort of mood im in. I either,

Pull in and let the pass

or

Stop and get out to give them an ear full! Usually when people see a stocky angry looking b4stard get out their car they back down! :D

If you think a skoda is bad try a mini! Police could locate most of these 'people' by driving around in a mini. A few years ago I went to overtake a dithering jag and transit on a long straight. Went past the jag and heard a bang as an Audi A3 overtook 6 or 7 cars behind us and tried to overtake 3 wide. Needless to say he didn't find enough room and bounced off the side or the mini then the kerb and almost lost it. He'd had the front end rebuilt 2 weeks previously! Mini had split sills a dent in the door and the rear arch damaged. Plus the chrome off the door handle where it carved the aluminium front wing and door up on the audi.

No-one was very impressed.
