What is this gunk in my engine bay? pics included

Featured Replies

Right noticed this gunk / grease / oil under my engine cover so took a picture, its between the timing belt cover and a big black pipe, (possibly turbo pipe - i don't know)

It's also all over my brake fluid resevour, anybody got any ideas to what it could be?

Thanks

Looks like oil blowing out of the boost pipe.

Is that bad?

It's not good.

You probably want to get the EGR, pipes and intercooler cleaned and/or replaced and the clips ont he boost pipe checked too.

If it's under warrenty then a dealer should sort it

possible pre-cursor to a popped boost hose.

You get oil build up in the intake system due to crankcase ventilation and EGR, it happens. Its not detrimental to the car. I'd just replace the seals on that top boost pipe and check the clips are intact.

Could be down to a clip onto the boost pipe leaking might be worth upgrading to some that you can tighten. Is the car running a remap or higher boost?

Has 12 months extended warranty, is this covered??

Yeah remapped, rr'd at 174. Where can i get some uprated clips??

Uprated clips are tricky as the system uses a push fit system not jubilee clips. If the clips are in good condition then they should be working fine.

Im thinking of wrapping some self amalgamating tape around the pipe or some PVC electrical tape to keep it tight?

What about that?

I wouldnt bother. the pipes are designed to relax whe not under boost then lock up when the boost builds up. Any tape wrapped around it will just look awful and fall off pretty quick once any oil gets under it.

Depends on the warrenty, often oil leaks are not covered but this is probably oil from the exhaust gass recycler that is building up and being forced out under boost.

Jason did something with his pipes, but either way you really want to get that oil cleared out as it wont do your engine any good.

Right oh, im sure devonutopia has uprated clips, might PM him, cheers

Bloody EGR valves, nothing but trouble,

Big job for a clean out?

Sorry guys but this Fabia is really ****ing me off, soooo many problems :thumbdwn:

A small amount of oil injestion wont do you engine any harm, after diesel is an oil itself.

I see this every day at work and its quite normal. Get the seals replaced, they will clean up the oil but they wont strip and clean everything internally as its considered normal.

Sorry to sound dumb but what seals and where are they, is this a diy job?

This isn't a problem, this is normal especially if you have it remapped. As Lummox has said the pipes relax when not under pressure and this means there will be a small amount of leakage and venting from the crank case. Unless it's using more oil than normal I would leave it

If you want to see problems buy a Peugot 307.

I had a pug, was a 306 - not as many problems as the Fabia but i've heard the 307's are aweful

cheers for that Decron, spoils my nice clean engine though!

There is nothing wrong with your car. My boost pipes are exactly the same. Misted with oil and a bit of sludge.

My EGR is actually leaking though which will be sorted soon.

Cheers everybody ;)

had a 106..killed it hehe

The seals are on the ends of the boost pipe when it is removed.

  • 7 months later...

you get these problems with write-offs

this is an old thread lol
