Looks nice in the green, I love that colour (I know many dont).

Not liking the 4" wheels much mind :P

Brian,

Great pics, thanks, that's just what I wanted! I've said this before, but I do think the Octavia Estate (4WD and 2WD) is a great looking car. I've also been tempted by the VW Golf Estate (if I opt for 2WD) but it somehow looks like the person who designed the rear wasn't allowed to see the front :)

(I've not seen it in the metal mind)

Cheers,

Richard.

I have seen it in the metal, lots, and I agree. The rear lights are plain wrong. :thumbdwn:

Thanks - it's Highland Green. It always surprises me how much of a difference the raised chassis makes to the profile, in comparison to the normal estate car - seems to be far higher than an extra 25mm off the ground.

Brian

I sat in a new Golf Estate in the showroom. I was immediately put off cause it felt very narrow inside. (the car not the showroom) A lot narrower than my Mk1 octavia

I actually see a lot of estates around and I have to say that I also prefer the look of the 4x4 with the raised ride height - seems to suit the car more

YouTube video of the 4x4.

Thanks for all the photos everyone, that video is great!!

Cheers,

R.

There's another YouTube video called "Skoda Octavia TDI 4x4 Test" which is also fab (probably because it looks exactly like mine...)

Brian

Here's mine in silver running on 16" wheels ....

Wehey - another on 16" Apollons!

One thing to be aware of is on the 4x4 TDI is the fuel cooler underneath the car - directly below the driver (on RHD cars) – see pic. This seems a little vulnerable especially if the car is driven on rough rocky tracks.

Not sure if the Scout is the same.

Was under ours yesterday at the dealers, having summer tyres fitted. We mentioned about ( no visible sump guard like the Scout) was shown beneath the car a fiber engine cover going from the bumper area back to the gearbox. It was completely fixed in to the chassis, but for two large vents for the air cooling to the gearbox . No other vulnerable areas did I see, even the sides were rapped with the same material. The rear had on the passenger side ( opposite exhaust) another covering, but stopped short of the boot bottom and the exhaust of course. The lot seemed ample to me if I was driving down either =small gravel tracks, snow of approximate known depth , and of course grass tracks. Would we go mountain climbing ??as we have done with our old Nissan Sunny in Bosnia over boulders and undulating donkey tracks, no we wouldn't. Yet did we damage the old Nissan Sunny, not at all!! only we did split a tyre very badly enough to lose it. We were also following locals using old Yugo's, so probably had a edge, and the Sunny is shorter. Just a note "Milotec" does a fibre glass sump guard for the Scout on licence and also for the 4x4 Ambient, but you need to change the rear bumper we are informed ,guard is then "stuck on with glue".

Hey Riph

The mpg at the moment isnt amazing, but im only doing short trips, which I think would explain it. I like having the ability to travel without hitting the bottom on anything. Went to see grandparents out in the sticks and met a milk tanker on the way. Was able to go right up on the bank, so easy. The ride is very smooth, but not uncomfortably wallowy, although I think at speed (NSL plus) it might be. Still getting used to the size of it, maneuvering in tight spaces, because I had the Fabia before. Am beginning to realise they aren't a very common car, so its an interesting one to have. Found out last night that the auto dimming rear mirror is brilliant. I had Lornas Clockwork Orange behind me all the way from Newbury, and all I saw of her were her two headlights, but just bright, not glaring. Very useful. I did take some pictures, my when I tried to get the off the camera it had a ballsup and deleted the card :rolleyes:Ill try again tommorrow

Thanks, I've got a bit of a holdup selling my car at the mo, but I'm 99% decided on the Octavia 4x4 now.

Basically I want something with 4WD and a good boot because I go on camping/hillwalking trips, the load space is useful for lots of light but bulky kit, the 4WD will be reassuring because I often end up down tight singletrack rural roads, often in very hilly areas, sometimes have had to drive 1/2 way up a bank to pass someone and grounded my car (an MX-5!!). Also it'll be good for slippery campsites.

I also want something moderately economical. I know that a 4x4 will never be as economical as a 2WD, but I'm not interested in having great performance. It's amazing how most 4x4s put performance ahead of economy. If people were willing to sacrifice a little performance then they could have 4WD with reasonable economy, but the market wants hatchback-like performance with 4WD, so that's what the market gets. The Octavia 4x4 (1.9) is probably the only car I know of where performance is compromised slightly rather than economy. 47mpg is the best I can find by quite some margin. The only other car that competes is the new Subaru diesels, but they are a lot more expensive.

And 13 secs 0-60 is actually over a sec better than my partner's Ibiza and I drive that around quite happily 95% of the time!

I havnt found the 1.9 to be lacking in power. Perfectly adequate for country lanes and motorways. :)

I havnt found the 1.9 to be lacking in power. Perfectly adequate for country lanes and motorways. :)

I think it's a good compromise myself, looking at this figures.

I don't mean to imply it's underpowered, what I mean is most other manufacturers don't offer anything with "moderate power and economy and 4WD". Since most 4x4s are viewed as premium products, they tend to be powerful to go with it. However, I don't want a "premium product" for posing in, I just want a well-made robust car with 4WD and reasonable economy and reasonable performance that I can take up mountain tracks and carry lots of kit with, plus do the daily M4 commute! Unfortunately, I'm almost a market niche these days (in that I'm actually buying a 4x4 for traction), hence there is surprisingly little to tempt me, apart from the Octavia 4x4, which is virtually perfect for me, from what I've read and experienced so far...

R.

I agree. The trade off between tarmac shredding performance balanced with a healthy economy is more than acceptable. Very pleased with ours.

:D
