Update, 14/4/08

Turned out the bearings were fine. The rear tyres were distorted!!!!!! £235 later for 2 new rear tyres.................................

i've mentioned this before, funny rear tyre wear can cause a drone.

what happens normally as the trailing edge wears quicker leading to a lip on the leading edge which then folds as the wheel rotates and flicks out as the wheel rotates, at speed this flicking becomes quite loud and leads to thinking the bearings are fubar :)

Where did you go for the £235 pair of tyres? Main dealer? And what make / size were they?

Mine had brand new boots on the front when I got it but I can see I'm going to have to get a new pair on the rear by the summer, want a ballpark figure for how much I'm looking at. It's got Pirelli 245/45/17's on there at the moment I think.

Apparerntly the wear on the tyres was fine for the age and miles covered, still had 6mm form an orriginal depth of 8mm.

I can vouch for this. In my case, knackered shocks caused the tyre wear, so keep an eye out, otherwise your new tyres may end up wearing badly :-(

Fair doo's to the garage, they checked out all the bits and bobs, all seem to be okay.

My drivers side wheel bearing is going at 71000km (44000 miles) and just under four years old.

After searching on here it seems to be quite common.

I've been quoted about $300 to fix - bit dearer than UK prices but that's what you get for living on a small Pacific island :)

Here here. Unfortunately 'er indoors wouldn't go that far away from kids etc. so we settled for S of France - no regrets

Uneven tyre wear used to be a common problem on MK4 Golfs but whether that has possibly carried over to the MK1 Octy I couldn't say.

RobClubley said "After searching on here it seems to be quite common", on here is of course the operative phrase and no criticism intended but this forum only represents a miniscule subset of all UK MK1 Octy owners so comments should be viewed in that context :)

Both front bearings failed on my Vrs @ 28000 mls within 60 miles of each other, the car had 3 days left under the Skoda 3 year warranty (2003,02 plate).

My local dealer had it in within 2 days and replaced them f.o.c without any problems.

Big thumbs-up to Robert Bamfords in Gloucester.
