Decisions, Decisions, Decisions !!

I called in at the local Skoda dealer today, as my car had developed a nasty creaking sound from the front suspension on compression. Quickly diagnosed as a dry upper Ball Joint (common apparently), booked in for next week.

So I start to have a look round (as you do), & noticed a 6 month old ex Skoda HQ Superb 130TDI Elegance, Dark Blue Met, Black Nappa interior etc etc etc.

Well I have to admit it is very nice !!

My vRS Rally has done 35K & is just under 2 years old.

My dilema is, do I go with the Pipe & Slippers approach (& maybe a Re-Map), or do I stick with 71/100 (who has just under a year left on Factory Warranty).

I guess it depends on what they offer me !!

Graham

Graham,

It all depends on your driving style:

a) happy to wallow along at a sensible speed as long as it's straight and flat and ........

B) like to drive on twisty A roads, booting it up motorways and go for a drive "just because it's good to", does the occasional track day :drive:

You decide!

Andy

Note to self: go to bed

With a remap you'd probably get 190-200 BHP and 350-400 lb/ft - adequate :)

KW do variant suspension for it, including the VAriant 3 :D

I was only looking, honest :D

Graham,

Its a great motor, and is fully speced - some of which are not imediatly noticable.

I have a 2.8v6 Elegance Superb full leather Tiptronic, driving it I get kicks as I do driving my Octavia RS. The Superb quality and build you will have a job to beat.

The Superb is a great luxury cruiser especially on motorways with passangers and does drive pretty well on other roads - better in my opinion than some mags make out.

In comparison the Octavia RS is the best allrounder - luggage space - comfort - performance. The Superb is best at what it was built for a luxury large saloon especially in leather elagance trim. It has some Audi extras not available on any Passat, and most of the options available on any Passat even the W8.

Watch the price of any deal as the new ones have been reduced in price - so secondhand the price shoul be also reflected.

Thanks John,

I guessed thats where the vRs was compared the Superb. I think I am just ready for a change, the white is starting to bore me a little, & if I am going to change, I fancy just that, a change !! (kind of a reverse mid life crisis !!)

Tavia, I know you were only looking !!, but I bet you have part numbers, delivery times etc etc ;)

Cheers

Graham

I have to say, that the Elegance trim is what I was really after, until the wife got involved.

What you have to ask yourself is..

do you need the room in the back for passengers?

do you do long distances at any time ?

would the better fuel economy help?

can you do without the extra boot space of the Octy?

do you like to fly/sprint around?

The Superb is a cracking car at doing what it is intended for and that is comfortable travelling capable of long distances without leaving you feeling wasted.

If however you only drive around towns, need the extra versatility or go on track days then the Octy is better.

Of course the Superb can have any amount of mods made to it, and dont forget the pd130 is one heck of a lump.

edit: Dark Metallic Blue is simply gorgeous when clean..check my galleries.

Join the stealth boys, its great fun kicking butt in an "ordinary" looking car!!!

I am in the process of changing focus in my Job.

I will be travelling to Germany (Frankfurt) once or so a month, trips to Holland aswell.

So the long journey option is a big bonus.

The Superb just may make me want to drive there more often.

I guess I just want a "Car Share" option, just to drive the one I feel like, I am also sick of the "Nova Boy" element constantly tailgaiting & spoiling for a fight.

The Re-Map option is not essential as I know the 130 is a good lump !!

As I said earlier, I was not seriously looking but the car just looked "Right"

Lets see what they offer (If they ever get back to me !!)

Problem is (and they guy on the Skoda Stand admitted that it put off customers) is the saloon. Most peopleneed the hatch. If they only would make a Superb with a hatch or estate and it would be a winner. Good car but not 'superb'. A diesel TDi Octy (maybe new one  ) would be better IMHO

I have travelled through Frankfurt on the way to the Czech Republic many times. Autobahn use is well suited to the Octavia RS as its well composed at all speeds. In normal and RS Octavias I have completed the none stop Journey to CZ 1000miles ish (except fuleling) at the destination always feel as if just completed a much smaller distance Journey. The Octavia can have its hatch area filled and perform as normal in performance, handling and braking. The Octavia an Superb would be hard to beat carrying a load and completing the journey in comfort and at rapid progress especially in the RS version. Always enough room for a few packs of Stella.

In Germay normally maintain 100 -110 constant.

The Superb I have only travelled on Auto routes in France and Belgium so cannot comment on Autobahn use yet. In the restricted speed of France and Belgium the Superb is so comfortable it becomes a bit boring, however on a trip with rear passengers it was the best option for all. I am going to Denmark and the Czech Republic via Germany in a few weeks so will be able to comment on the Superb and 2 lane Autobahn route use then.

The Superb boot is large compared to most cars as people will comment when you show them it. The Superb boot just needs a lot of planning on how to pack as the first items in cannot be retrieved without removing the last in items.

A friend of mine who tows a caravan with a 130pD superb says it tows better than his previous Octavia 110 deisel.

If the secondhand dealler price is right the Superb is an excelent buy with the first cut depreciation off.

Speed is becoming very limited in this country and France, got a ticket in France a few weeks back:( I am driving around on cruise restriction most of the time and the Superb is becomming the prefferd choice for a lot of restrictive Journies.
