Exhaust questions (MOT)

Featured Replies

My MOT is due so done some checks on the car. I have found an exhaust rubber hanger is snapped and there is a leak from the rear silencer.

Would exhaust repair putty only be delaying the inevitable? It appears to be coming from a weld/seam in the silencer.

Can I just buy some sort of universal rubber exhaust mount ring and use a cable tie as that seems to be what the people who did the centre exhaust last year did?

Thanks in advance.

:)Repair putty is just a short term repair but it would get you through an MOT. The alternative mount and cable tie would pass too, as long as it's reasonably secure.

Small leaks are actually a pass and advise, but quite often can cause havoc with the emmisions test as the lambda reading may be too high.

When you can buy a rear silencer and a rubber hanger for around thirty quid including postage it hardly seems worthwhile temporarily bodging it.

You could temporarily bodge if you weren't hanging onto the car for long. I did do a simple repair for my exhaust last year which last 2 / 3 more months, but had to have it done for my MOT in the end.

I agree - not worth bodging an exhaust as they are cheap and the repairs are a pain (dirty and uncomfortable) - learn from my mistakes, do it once and forget it!

Jorily for all skoda parts every time, look on ebay for his shop

The place that did my last exhaust would fit a rear exhaust for £36.95. Seems barely worth the hassle of waiting on the postman and fitting myself at that price.

Would like a full stainless steel system but that will have to wait for £££ unfortunately.

As Dave says, but why bodge a universal mount when most fast fit places will sell you the right one for a brass Maggie or 2?

Can't believe it...

Took back to place that fitted the centre nearly a year ago for £39.95, expecting to pay £36.95 for the rear exhaust. They looked at it, noticed it was the clamp loose rather than blowing (I guess it must have been deflecting off the rim of the silencer as it felt like it came from there). They remembered fitting the centre (guess they don't see many Skoda Favorits) and fixed it, put a new mount on (didn't do it 100% perfectly, but I am guessing it's secure for MOT), and re-seated a rubber bush at the bottom of my shock absorber by wedging with a screwdriver for free. Looking back I feel a bit of a git for not giving a tip - didn't think at the time, oh well.

Brilliant - whats the name of the place , they deserve a plug!

Exhaust Discounts ~ Home Page is them. Based in Leeds near City Centre. They're between Yorkshire Evening Post building and Armley Gyratory, I found them difficult to find at first. If I remember correctly, heading towards Armley Gyratory, there's a proper left turn (which takes you to posh flats) and then it's the next turn for these guys with just a lowered kerb.

For the record.

1.

a. A part of the system missing or excessively deteriorated

b. an exhaust system mounting missing, or In such condition that it does not fully support the exhaust system.

Note: An alternative mounting device is acceptable providing the system is secure and the fixing is not likely to fail prematurely-

2.

a. A major leak of exhaust gases from any part of the system

Note: A minor exhaust leak from, for example, a connection joint or a pin hole, is not a Reason for Rejection

b. a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition.
