Temperature Sensor Probs (and possibly more)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've done some searching here and see the temperature sensor sems to be a common poblem with the Octavia. I hope that's all my problem is, but I'm hoping for confirmation here.

I have a 53 plate 1.6 petrol.

Normally the temperature gauge sits bang on 90 and doesn't move. Yesterday I noticed it only managed to climb to 50 ish when siting at the lights. When driving at speed it would drop to almost zero, then start to limb again when stationary (but not past 50). Today it is stuck on zero and won't move.

ALSO, at the same time I've noticed no heat coming into the car. The heater is set to maximum, but the air coming it is luke warm at best (a bit of a pain as it was -4 here this morning).

ALSO, when I turned the car off this morning after taking my wife to work, the fans stayed on for about betwen 5 and 10 minutes. I found that a bit strange as it was -2 at the time and I hadn't been on that long a journey (this *could* be normal, but now I'm paranoid).

Could the temperature sensor be the root cause of all of this (bit of a pain as the car's only just done 30K)?

If I have to change it, I'll do it myself, but I need help locating it. had a look in the engine and think I've found it, but i don't really want to guess (wish I had a haynes manual).

And last but not least: Any idea where I'll be able to get a replacement one on a Sunday?

Thanks in advance (and sorry for the long post).

Chris

Sounds like the therrmostat is stuck open to me.

The lack of heat inside from the heater would point me in that direction as well.

id agree, thermostat faulty:thumbup:

Thanks for the answers guys.

Is replacing the thermostat stil a DIY job (I'm reasonably compitent)?

Better still, is there an easy way to 'unstick it'?

My only question is; If that is the case and it isn't the sensor, wouldn't the temerature gauge be reading correctly?

The sensor is immersed in the coolant flow after all, and that will get hot no matter what the thermostat is doing.

Chris

But the coolant isnt getting hot as its being overcooled hence the heater not getting warm. When driving the fact you have constant cooling plus the air coming through the radiator means it overcools, only statrts to warm up when your stationary.

Thanks for the clarification, however the temperature needle doesn't even budge now when it's stationary.

I suppose both components could have gone, but I'll try the thermostat first. Off to halfords for a haynes manual I think :)

I've been to halfords to get the haynes manual (they didn't have the part), and in the way back the (quoting name from owners manual) "Testing Engine Electronics" warning light came on.

Does this reveal anything new, or is it expected with the faulty thermostat?

C
