Thermostat: is this it? (picture)

Featured Replies

As identified in a previous thread (thanks to those invilved), I need to change the thermostat on my 53 plate 1.6 petrol silverline Octavia.

I've got a haynes manual, but as far as identifying the component goes, the pictures don't give much away. I think I've found it (see picture below), and I assume that's the temperature sensor on the side with the wire attached. Can someone comfirm I have identified the thermostat correctly?

Also as stated in the other thread the "Testing Engine Electronics" light (the little yellow engine image) on the instrument panel has come on. Is this to be expected with a broken thermostat?

Thanks in advance

Chris

I don't think it is. I've just changed the thermostat on my A4 and there are no electrical connectors involved.

Thanks for looking.

What I'm looking at is behind the thing with the electrical connector (I'm assuming this is the temperature sensor). EDIT: the haynes manual says the sensor is connected to the thermostat housing.

If I've identified it correctly, the thermostat should be inside the (sort of) dimond shaped cover secured by the bolt below the conector in the picture (and another bolt obscured by a hose).

Do I have it?

Ah yeah I see what you mean.

The temperature sender (circled and with wiring) fits into the coolant thermostat housing. The thermostat is in the bulkhead side of that housing, ie on the opposite side to the sender.

This is a picture of a new thermostat housing for a Felicia 1.6. It comes complete as shown. I recommend replacing the whole assembly rather than just the thermostat for peace of mind.

Thanks for that.

If I buy the whole thing I suppose there won't be any doubt as to where it goes :)

Oh, and for reference, also (auroan pointed out), I don't think what I've posted a picture of is the thermostat housing.

After some digging, the thermostat housing *should*, be connected to the top radiator hose. The thing in my picture is connected to the bottom hose.

I've just been quoted £50 for the thermostat from my skoda dealer!!!

He asked for the engine code, and I didn't know what it was. After giving my reg plate number he said I needed the expensive one (he had a choice of two, the other was £10).

Anyone know how I find the engine code?

Just my luck, oh and out of curiosity, I asked how much to fit it... wait for it... £130 plus the cost of the part

Daylight robbery!

Chris

 My thermostat cost £11 from Audi. Mind you I think £130 is lucky. Mine needed the bumper, radiator, two fans, ribbed belt, ribbed belt tensioner and thermostat house removing plus the timing tension belt loosened before I could swap mine. God knows how much it would have cost me if I hadn't done it my self.

Try Halfords, they sell a large range of thermostats and could well be cheaper than the dealer.

Cheers for that.

Yes, I've looked there. It seems I have the BFQ engine where the thermostat has some sort of integrated heater (or something, can't remember what he said).

I've looked around and the only thermostat I can find for the 1.6 petrol BFQ is just the basic thermostat. The guy at Skoda claimed they have been sent these in the past and they don't fit.

I've asked them to get me one in, however I do think the price is high. As to them charging me £130 for a 5 - 10 minute job? Well, the answer has something to do with a long walk, and a short peir.
