^^ What he said.

Particularly interested in the condition of your cam, as I also have the same one, and any benfits to be had by porting and polshing.

Hmm, not good news on the cam. A couple of the lobes had roughness on them, so looks like I'm being forced to get a standard camshaft brand new. :( This also jeopardises this weekend's plans too. :(

:( Is this the one sourced from Allards?

Yeah. Will see how it goes. Looks like I'm set for a £500 bill for new camshaft, 8 tappets & 10 shells. Amazing how expensive the tappets & shells are - basically as much as the cam itself.

Not sure what this means for future tuning but I'll be sending my suspect cam back to Allard to see what can be done with it, to perhaps "renew" it and fit it at a later date. :)

Guess its best to find these things whilst the engine is still in good running order than that it blowing up.

Well, despite the rather unfortunate need for new parts I think its good to get them done whilst the engine is apart rather than have it go spectacularly later. Anyway - Here's some pics.

I make an early start removing some of the boost pipework

DSCN1967.jpg

The to do list - new head, 4 race nozzles, and some gaskets and stuff.

DSCN1968.jpg

V Modded my front offside wheel on a Frontera in the garage. :D

DSCN1969.jpg

The Frontera pile gathers as I get the strut brace off, and the wheel arch liner.

DSCN1970.jpg

Work is getting done at hell of a pace! Its just a blur!

DSCN1971.jpg

Turbo coming off, inlet already off.

DSCN1972.jpg

Turbo just held on by the studs

DSCN1973.jpg

Pump off the side of the head.

DSCN1974.jpg

Thought whilst there I would remove my "bending out at the sides" back plate holder

DSCN1975.jpg

And use some "leverage" to hope to bend it into a more boot shaped style. :D:rofl:

And look II

Cylinders/pistons verified as being in very good condition

A peek at the turbo from above. Some evidence of blowing.

DSCN1982.jpg

Old head starting to be dismantled on the bench. Bits set aside to go back in in same place. :)

DSCN1983.jpg

Old head.

DSCN1984.jpg

A look at Camshaft damage I

DSCN1985.jpg

And a second look.... :(

DSCN1986.jpg

The new head waiting for its load

DSCN1987.jpg

Except that damn cam isn't going in!

DSCN1988.jpg

Block cleaned up in readiness for new gasket

DSCN1989.jpg

Old inlet manifold compared to new. Could see up closer the widening of the new inlet manifold. :D

DSCN1990.jpg

Good work, hope it works out how you want it.

is the cam actually damaged? just looks like its lost its shine to me.

Cheers for the pics Jase!

Disappointing to see such damage to the cam :thumbdwn:

Be good to get some of the niggles sorted out ;)

Was told "It's f***ed" :D It shouldn't be rough at all apparently. :)

No, it definitely shouldn't be scored like that. The cam on my Passat was pristine after 130k+.

Just think of all those metal filings running around in your oil

get the wet and dry out, lol

Glad I'm changing the oil. :D Well, it must have been a gradual decline. I've been wondering now if this damage is what caused my poor starting at times? I put it down to dodgy glowplugs.

Oh, and a first for me. I saw glowplugs GLOWING! Never seen that before. Each one of my replacement ones was hooked up to a power-pack, and they glowed like buggery! I couldn't help but laugh as I'd never seen a glow plug glow. :D

It's a **** about the cam jason :(

You getting a new Allard one or a new OEM job? That sort of wear isn't good, has Alex any ideas why it is like that?

Lol at the glow plug comment  Just don't put your mitts near them when they are on or cooling ;)

Nice work so far

From what I was told, the Allard one is a regrind of the OEM one and as such isnt as hard, so it 'goes'. I cant confirm this but if that's the case I wouldnt go anywhere near it as you need it to be done right from the start. The OEM cam is already pretty darn aggressive, I must admit I was tempted by a cam to get more air in and reduce smoke, which the Allard one can help with definitely.

Jason here - Sat at the garage now waiting for the bits to arrive, then the engine can go back together. Can't really do anything at the moment so I'm colour coding my vent surrounds. Something to pass the time, eh? :D

I was having a think on the way into work today and wondered if the oil pressure is high enough. Maybe a bit of wear on the pick up pump.

The reason I say that, is that seems the most obvious reason for the cam wearing :(

I think the crank would go first due to lacking oil pressure. The head was definitely very full of oil when taken off. :)

Still waiting for my damn tappets and shells. Have a feeling the car won't be ready until wednesday now. Hate having to rely on parts suppliers. :(

Fantastic work, Jason. Keep it up. Looking forward to the result
